Unfortunately i can freely admit I am the shiny new object type of person so even tho this thread was one of the best I have EVER read (thanks to Quasar and the original OP) ' I still did the usual 'oh but this,but that' took me awhile of facing up to some realities to realise what everyone who is legitimate has been saying all along. NOTHING come's easily without any work.....
Anywhoo once I decided enough was enough I got stuck right down to it. By no means whatsoever am I rich..not even close. I've been shall I say obsessing for about 2 weeks and only this week really have I finally found my pair to go and actually list some stuff.Results....12 items sold within 5 days!! Unfortunately as I am a very new seller I've had to go with the less competive products and smaller profit margins BUT this does not matter to me at all as I know as soon as I get my selling limits lifted I'll be away. Like I said i'm not rich i'm probably about £20 better of than I was but this is that magic word that's been thrown around left right and centre 'scalable'...Again Quasar you 'da man' for sharing so much.

ha ha yeah tough gig at the begining huh? However I think been patient with ebay will work wonders as frustrating as it can be. The way I see it the more you sell the easier it all becomes. Another tip for new people with brand new selling accounts....
As another member on here by the name of Ducane said go for products with less that 50 listings for that keyword!! So far one of my products is selling like hotcakes. I'm using a rule of at least 280 (roughly 10 people a day) searches per month and no more than 50 competing listings. Still pretty difficult to get ranked within the the top spaces. However as Quasar mentioned starting with a popular seller's description is a good start.

Hey guys BIG warning to you all if your new to selling and reading this!!
As I mentioned it was great getting lots of products to sell within a week and have continued to do so with low profit margins. Even with the low profit margins I was origanally happy as it was just about worth the effort. However I open up ebay to see i've recieved an invoice message.
WOW just wow due to ebay and the final value fees I've just about made a whole £1ish in actual net after selling about 16 products.Yep for all the work to find those products and check I could even rank on the first page with certain keywords I've made all of £1ish!!!
Thing is because of the other competitors (and there's enough for almost anything you can think of ) and the fact I have a very new selling account I've had to really lower my prices (so far it's the only thing that works and works straight away) just to get in the first five listings on page 1 so after selling and paying for the item and say getting £1.50 in profit, you still have to take in paypal fees which again is no problem as I run everything through a calculator first BUT then.... and I blame myself for not looking into it: come's the final value fee.
In other words guys make sure you find products as quasar said with at least £5 profit after the initial listing and paypal fees so the 10% final value fee won't hit you so hard. I don't know how other people with new accounts have been able to do so quite so easily...maybe i'm not creative enough to think outside the box. Oh well more researching for me. oh yeah just type in 'paypal fee calculator' and the first one you see in google is the one i'm currently using. GOOD LUCK to you all. I just wanted to emphasise the importance of finding products with high profit capabilities so you don't end up wasting a week or so like I did :/

Simplest and safest formula is this, make sure you get atleat 15% profit.
eBay - 10% FVF
Paypal - 2.9%
Plus remember eBay now bill you on the total sale price which is - cost of item + postage,
so eBay are making 10% fee off your postage cost too.
Best this is to sell commodities, ie: products people want to buy over and over, they need it every month, you drive the customer from eBay direct to your ecommerce store to save the 10%, you dod this by providing a good relationship first on ebay.
I used to make 10K / mth selling TV series box sets imported from China - cost $70 - sales price $250,
sadly those days are gone.
Consummables and commodities is how to make a business out of it these days.

Yeah I completely forgot about taking in the 15% profit after the initial cost of the item. There's my biggest mistake I think. I think I will also look to source from other places as well to bring in bigger and better profits from the beginning.Most importantly is going through ALL the fees before I even think about listing. Now aliexpress is my thought...I guess I was comfortable with Amazon, but so many people are using this sole supplier to dropship from that the pricing on ebay has become way to comepetitive for someone like myself with low feedback numbers. Just means i'm going to have to get comfortable with importing as well.

Yes Aliexpress was my primary source of suppliers too, however remember to inform your customers that their order will be coming from overseas and expect the time delay of item arriving.. BECAUSE.. eBay did away with sellers being able to leave negative feedback.
So you get alot of buyers buying and not paying these days, because they will not get a negative feedback for not paying, yes you can get a strict against them but most buyers dont care as eBay doest want to bann people from shopping on the site.
The way to position yourself is let customers know they will be getting items shipped directly from factories in China but you will be a local customer service rep in THEIR country to manage returns / faults etc, becuase the other option is importing large quantities of stock and you dont want to do this until your scale is big enough.
Another great source of products is iOffer, which is full of AliExpress sellers anyway, good thing is iOffer accepts Paypal, Aliexpress does not.
I now sell protein powder and supplements, as people are always buying these every month.
