You guys amaze me. Thank you ... I'm so humbled. Heart

I actually started to NOT post this. I spent just 20 minutes writing it but it took over an hour to post because I kept screwing up the formatting (in addition to the forum's text field formatting, I usually go over to an online hex color code chart to find "just the right" colors for my text ... to match or compliment the images I use). The text kept reverting to mice-print and it drove me crazy.

What made me wonder after-the-fact whether to post is this:

A lot of people will already know these things.

That may be (my inner voice said) but I'll bet even MORE people WON'T know. And they most likely don't know WHERE to find out.

OR

Some may take this the wrong way and think I'm preaching, especially about my position on REPs and common courtesy.

I'm not trying to teach adults how to behave - far from it. I know there are all kinds of people in the world and we won't all agree on anything. But it is my post and therefore, it's only my opinion and my attempt to help anyone who needs it to spend less time getting more of what they want on the forum.

I wasn't worried so much about the other TIPS because they don't critique human behavior in a way that some may find condescending. But folks: I posted this to be helpful yet I know sometimes, good intentions fail.

So, the very fact that I have some supporters makes me comfortable if some nay-sayers decide to post their opinions.

That being said, I invite all opinions.

BUT HERE'S WHY I REALLY POSTED TODAY...

I just finishing reading a PM from my buddy feefiefohfum where he talked about (among other things) this thread.

He gave me a great extra tip that I will now go back and add to the original post.

It was THAT important.

And that extra tip is this:

MONITOR YOUR PM SETTINGS

People oftentimes ask for advice, download links, etc., via PM and when the sender tries to get the information through, their in-box is either filled and they've reached their private message limit or they have private messaging turned off in their settings.

If you have a set limit, go back in and clear out/delete older messages to make room for new ones.

Check the settings in your User's Control Panel and make sure the button for Private Messaging is ticked to "ON." If it's ticked to "OFF" then you need to change make the change to turn it back on.

At one time, I has limits like everyone else. Now, I can send one message to 200 people at once. Lala has been good at upgrading my account so I have a few perks. But it's important to know, people, you've got to weed out your In-Box and before you ask for something, be sure you can receive it.

I can't communicate with you or send you a link by PM if I can't get through.

Just recently, someone asked me a question. I was eager to help so I wrote a very detailed reply (the only kind I know how to write).

When I hit the SEND button, I got the message that he'd reached his PM limit.

Oh nooooooo!!!!! Hitface

At first, I went back to the post he referred to and posted that I was trying to reach him; that if he was reading it, he should clear out his in-box.

Then, my nagging subconscious chimed in...

But what if he DOESN'T come back to read it? What if he's waiting to hear back, thinking "That Layna...she's ignoring my PM."

So, I sent a PM to my favorite Administrator and asked if some space could be added to this guy's account JUST so I can send this message.

She made it happen and my message went through later that day.

He was happy to get my reply and found it very useful. I was happy that I was able to help.

But all the drama could have been avoided had he simply cleaned up his in-box.

Or had the forum been a little more generous in doling out PM (and REP) limits.

I'm sure there's a reason the forum Admins restrict some accounts to a limit on PMs and REPS but it makes no sense to me.

Again, thanks for liking my share and tolerating my long-winded style.

I luv you guys Heart

Great post @Layna thanks.
I'd like to add one of the patterns I noticed.
For example, open up some thread you want and usually everyone can find download link in comments-post in 99.9% of cases , maybe some mirrors in some post comments not working but usually in next few comment-posts works
You just have to be persistent and patient...
Thank you very much @LAYNA.It's always a pleaser to read you.
@Farid27: Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

@SHINOBI NINJA: Great tip. I've experienced that, too. Someone too hasty or not looking through some of the lesser-used mirror links will quickly say "Links all dead." But if you spend just a little time and energy, you may find a working link.

Just because someone claims the links are dead doesn't always mean they are.

Thanks for mentioning that.

Hi Layna,
Get ideas for newbies.
I have found when downloading from Zippy I use the Right click to Download if that doesn't work then try again with right click and 90% of the time it works on second try.

Joe
@bhaffiliateman: Thank you for that tip. And thanks for your kind comment. I am glad you find this post helpful.

Question: Am I the only one who feels that Zippy has become a kind of nuisance lately?

Years ago, it didn't exhibit the strange behaviors it does now.

Zippy is one of the reasons I have an ad blocker extension on my browser. With Zippy, I used to get everything from the dreaded red screen with a skull-and-crossbones danger warning to "fake" takeover screens where a mechanical sounding person tells you to call the number on the screen to unfreeze your computer (all you need to do is use your Task Manager to shut the browser down then re-boot) to pop-ups and pop-unders (which are really sneaky ... sometimes you can hear people talking and can't tell the source until you minimize the current browser and see that another one was hiding in the background).

Now, I occasionally get 2 identical screens appear when I click a Zippy link. Weird.

I think the hosting companies from these file share sites are so hell-bent on users actually SEEING the ads their clients pay for that they're trying to be creative in finding ways to force-feed them to us ... but it's a royal nuisance.

But I agree with you, bhaffiliateman; I often stop the first action and do the download a second time and then it works.

Thanks for that. I've written a post about how to get around the crazy antics of some mirror links with an emphasis on Zippyshare.

But Zippy has its benefits. It is quick to use, it's free, it's fast, most people are familiar with it and many consider it the go-to download platform. So, I'm compelled to keep using it for shares.

Keep those comments (and tips) coming folks. If your tip relates directly to "getting the best stuff on the forum" then I will add it to the original post for all to see.

Thanks
