API support was added in the 1.4 version. As far as I can tell this is only version 1.2

I've used this version on shared hosting and never had a problem.

ArpReach 1.2 has been working just great. It has Triggers, and they make life easier but It doesn't make sure your list is clean. You have to do that manaually.
Mailwizz on the other hand doesn't have Triggers, but does keep your list clean. Plus, it has API support.
Try them both and see which works best for you.
