WP5 - BIG changes coming. (Gutenberg !! )

Classic editor is still there, it was merely moved to a plugin.
Install it from here and forget all about this WP5 hype drama.

Neither hype, nor drama here - just concern and a small helping of distrust of major upgrades to ANY s/w.

There are 2 main concerns that this thread is aimed at:
1 - Whether WP5 will break existing, in-use themes and plugins;
2 - That it is a forced change which many users will wish to avoid until the bugs hae been revealed and slain.

Alerts are now being sent (if they are activated) that WP installations will automatically be 'upgraded' to 5.0 - which look like this:

Softaculous users DO have an easy alternative choice, like so:

Quote:If you would NOT like to upgrade to WordPress 5.0 since it is a major version, you can choose to upgrade only to Minor versions of WordPress within the 4.9 branch.

In order to set the auto upgrade to minor versions only please login to your control panel and go to Softaculous enduser panel. Go to the Edit Installation page for your installation(s) and select the "Upgrade to Minor versions only" radio button and Save the details.

ClassicPress is now also available as well, if desired.

Failing all else, if your site updates before you've made a choice, you could always re-use a recent backup, or try what Goorda suggests - though there may be problems still with such a major change.

I've been worried about the Gutenberg update since it was first announced. The reality is, that it's the future of WP so I'll adapt and learn it.

Now that it is out, here are some bits of info from testers and users...forewarned IS forearmed:

My personal position on this is that it is too new and most likely too troublesome as a result, especially for the goodies we all tend to use from here.
My WP installations are not taking this on automatically, I will watch for affirmations of it coming of age before risking that sort of hassle.

This was my initial attitude as well. I started using Gutenberg as soon as it became available as an optional plugin. I sent feedback as I encountered problems.

Eventually, it just became too much. Images didn't work right. I couldn't wrap text around them. Links didn't take the first, and sometimes second time I put them in. It was just a pain. So, I deactivated the plugin.

I knew it was shipping with 5.0. WordPress had also put out that the Classic Editor would be available as a plugin indefinitely once 5.0 launched, so that was cool.

I tried Gutenberg again after the update. While some fixes to the previous problems I experienced have been fixed, it's just nowhere near ready to be the main editor for WordPress. I didn't last 24 hours before installing the Classic Editor plugin.

I'll stick with WordPress, but they have quite a ways to go with Gutenberg. I'd say it should still be in alpha phase.

For folks who DO NOT want this alpha quality abortion here are some good reasons:




I don't know about you - but I despise forced changes - especially if they are buggy.
My WP installs are set to stay at 4.9.8 for a while at least to avoid troubles - but if your site auto-upgraded before you could stop it, here comes some more info..
