I had the same problem starting off. I just couldn't find any margins to work with. Then I adapted a method which I think helped me make progress.

- I go on Amazon website and click on a certain category. It doesn't matter, it could be any category, lets say Toys and Games.

- On the left hand tab, if you scroll down you'll see "Avg. Customer review", click on the 4-stars and up. This will tell you which products are popular at least.

- When I get there, I sort by the AMOUNT of customer reviews by looking through the page. The amount of reviews is in brackets, besides the stars. This will tell you which products are most talked about, not necessarily liked.

- I take a product with a high review count (not stars) and paste it on ebay. If there are more than 50 sellers, I back out. If there are less, I try to list this product.

- I'm not trying to be the cheapest out there. I want to list it at a price that makes profit for me. So I type the product name on ebay, on the left hand tab there's a box for "completed listings". Tick this. Sort by highest price. The idea here is to see the highest amount this product has sold for. (note that only the prices in GREEN sold. The ones in red had no buyers.)

- If the highest price that last sold makes me a profit, then I will list it at that price and try to beat the cheaper products on my title and pictures and description.

- To get a competitive edge on titles, I use Google keywords tool. Type in your product, lets say "Visine". Click 'get ideas', Click on the tab "keyword ideas". Here you'll see what customers actually typed into google in relation to this product. The idea is to list your ad in exactly the same language your customer would use, making you seem the more knowledgable on the listing.

- So I can list my visine product using the google tool as "Visine Eye Drops, Chronic Dry Eye Treatment, Original, Click for ingredients".

- I've been lucky in that a few of my listings have gone straight in at top 5 for my targeted product. I have only made one sale but it's been only 1 day but I have 15 watchers along about 20 products. Lots of views. My prices are not the cheapest though but I'm convinced my method will make me more than I lose.

LeggyAnita, you're right. The Google "Keyword Tool" has become "Keyword Planner"
and you have to log in to use it.

I found some other free tools. Some require a simple signup.

Ubersuggest – ubersuggest.org/
SEO Book – tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/
WordPot – wordpot.com

I haven't tried them yet, but they might be worth playing with.

I have just listed about 25 items. Right after I listed something that should have made me about $7 it sold. In New York. Because of taxes, I hade to pay an extra $6. We will see what I actually pay in fees and see if I can break even.

Just a couple of other quick comments:

1.) If a method or methods for doing any of this process work for you - go for it. Everyone works differently and you should use a system or process that gets results. A couple of you have mentioned some systems are better than what's in the book.

Don't talk through your hats!

Until you can prove your comments with product identification, sales, and income, these comments are nothing but wild speculation - opinions and conjecture.

Personally, the "systems" I have seen posted so far are clumsy and take way too long when compared to my systems and Tony's system. Some of you seem to be down on Tony's system because YOU cannot make it work. That doesn't mean it doesn't work.

So, ultimately, you need to do what works for you. But prove it before you slam someone's system that is working - or think you know some things because you "believe" it to be so based on some arbitrary conclusions.

2.) I see the typical neophyte claims from people that aren't even rookies yet because they haven't taken any action. Action is defined as finding a product, listing it for sale, making the sale, and determining if you did things right.

Or what you need to do better in your next auctions. No one said you were going to be an Ebay marketing wizard after a few auctions - whether they were successful or not.

So, for you neophytes (you know who you are), show respect for the people that are "walking the walk" and not just flapping their gums and "talking the talk." You have not even attained rookie status yet - you have not done anything!
