RE: [GET] James Schramko: Work Less Make More
Hi. I clicked on that button, couple times, and other pages spawned. Spam type pages. I'm Using latest chrome and android 7.1.1. File doesn't download. I think a better storage site would be ge.tt :)

In digging up old posts I'm finding that many times Solidfiles links are the only ones left that work. I understand your desire to see VirusTotal info but I question how that protects people. Maybe I'm missing something but if a person wanted to be malicious couldn't they just upload an infected file to share, do a VT scan with a clean version of the file of the same name and post the clean file VT info? Shouldn't we always just do the scans ourselves?

RE: [GET] James Schramko: Work Less Make More
@Tesla: It's not my desire for people to provide a virus scan ... I thought it was protocol for posting, per forum rules.
Virus Total says that when YOU posted the original share, it was clean. That's all. But that goes a long, long way in protecting your reputation and building trust. Something that (seemingly) has gone the way of the dinosaur. Sure, someone with an agenda could always do what you point to ... deceive downloaders by posting a clean VT link then uploading a malicious version of the file after the fact. Which is why people are encouraged to do their own virus check for any file they download...especially from a B-H site or someplace unfamiliar to them. Just because a VT scan link is provided, it doesn't mean you can't do another virus check. Upon running an independent virus check, they will THEN catch that malicious file that was "sneaked" in. Furthermore, they may come back to the forum to warn others and if they complain to the Moderators, and it happens more than a few times, that sharer could be banned. I use Avast as my anti-virus program and as a file is downloading, if there is something suspicious, it triggers a warning and stops downloading. I will have to go into the control panel and make an exception to continue downloading it. So, again, in your example, anyone with a anti-virus program worth a hoot will STILL be warned about a faked file. Let me share an example about the dangers of not posting a virus scan... Not long ago, there was a share in the Copywriting section of the forum and the poster did not provide a virus scan. After I downloaded the file (it downloaded with no warning from my A-V program by the way!) I was surprised to find a TON of .exe files there instead of the usual PDFs or videos I had come to expect. I wondered what kind of copywriting course would have executable files so I uploaded to Virus Total and found more than 40 suspicious files! Many were actually viruses. A few of us reacted on the thread; a couple of us contacted the Mods; I contacted the OP and the thread was shut down. Now, was the OP responsible? Let me say I don't believe for a moment it was done intentionally. When we communicated, I understand she just did not know how to provide a VT link. So, what happened? Maybe she picked up the file elsewhere and wanted to share it here. There's a real danger to doing that! It wasn't her intention to infect people's computers with a file that passed many A-V programs but still harbored nearly 4 dozen viruses ... but perhaps it WAS the intent of the person who originally shared the file. Ultimately, she became responsible because it was her share. I try to provide a VT scan (URL link AND data) but sometimes a file is too large (over 128 MB) and then I explain why I'm not providing a scan and recommend that people scan the individual files inside the rar or zipped archive using either VT or their computer's A-V program. But not taking every actionable step is like leaving your house to go to work but not closing the front door behind you. You can't be too surprised upon your return if your home is ransacked with valuables missing. Still, I see a lot of people providing very little detail about the files they share here. *** No virus scan (to show people that the file is safe to download) *** No sales page link (so people will get an idea if they even want or need the share) *** No indication about the source of the file (snatching-and-grabbing from a less reputable B-H site can be quite dangerous) Again, I thought a virus scan was required here as well as on other B-H sites ... even when sharing basic PDF files.
