Do you have a web site ? Maybe worth a little worry right now...
Most folks with a website use some form of paid hosting - whether for a single domain, or more domains via reseller hosting.
Also, most sites are using servers that use cPanel.

Therein lies the rub.

Quote:cPanel recently announced a new pricing model that includes an account based component.
This change has proven to dramatically increase some client's monthly fees by over 2000% or more.
While cPanel has the right per their agreements to change pricing at any time, this move is an abuse of dominance in the hosting community.

The bottom line is that hosting providers pricing will be forced higher - and for those with multiple domains - this could make for a much larger expense.

Folks who have even just a single domain on inexpensive hosting may see that cost double or worse - their provider may just fold.

Most likely lots of free hosting providers will also vanish.

Any that are determined to keep low pricing for their clients will likely be forced to change to an alternate, like
Code:
DirectAdmin:https://www.directadmin.com

Or others like:
Code:
https://www.ispconfig.org/
https://www.virtualmin.com/

And more info:
Code:
https://alternativeto.net/software/cpanel/?platform=linux

Older, but maybe interesting still:
Code:
http://comparecamp.com/6-free-alternatives-to-cpanel-that-you-should-consider/

Of course, those who have insisted upon using windows based servers will be laughing right now - but in truth most of those folks have already been paying a large premium right along as that sort of hosting is normally more costly.

Of course it would be great if cPanel would back down on this matter, seeing how so many folks are already complaining far and wide - but that level of greed usually knows no boundaries. Mad Slap

Here is a petition about it that someone put up, if curious:

My hosting provider already moved to directAdmin. I prefer cPanel/WHM.

RE: Do you have a web site ? Maybe worth a little worry right now...
IMHO, no one has copied cpanel because there was no money to be made. But now . . . I'm thinking someone should be providing some competition. Anyone who can develop a secure, easy to use platform now has an opportunity to make some real dough!
Anyone out there with mad programming skills?
Cheers,

RE: Do you have a web site ? Maybe worth a little worry right now...
Plesk was quite good, but they got greedy years ago. I would expect the open source community to step it up now. As you mentioned, there was no need to do anything (even though there where a few opensource panels) up until this point.
Whoever comes up with a nice pricing plan now, will be on top for quite a while with a pretty big paycheque if they are far cheaper than cPanel and Plesk.

I am with three hosting companies at the moment, one has gone to DirectAdmin and I am expecting the other two, to either raise prices significantly or go to DirectAdmin.

RE: Do you have a web site ? Maybe worth a little worry right now...
My main provider will either go with DirectAdmin, or try to find a better deal.
They contacted me proactively with this news as I'm one of their very 1st clients who has been with them from the start.

Thanks for the reply of thanks Berlinerin !!

For those of us who only have english, this is likely not a very good time to buy hosting as things are very likely going to be a mess for a while sometime very soon.

Of course it will also be a great opportunity for anyone who is willing to invest in a server and space on a good server farm - to get started right from the beginning with DirectAdmin and pick up the former clients of smaller providers that will fold when they cannot pay for cPanel anymore.
Hosting is hard and constant work, but for some folks it will be just what they've dreamed of.

Thank you for these good information!

If one have no cPanel but want to use Cloudeflare:

I remember, I have seen: Cloudeflare (automatically can be installed) on cPanel.

Good that I have purchased Cloude-Defender. (Because we in Germany have no cPanel).

If one now have NO Cpanel, but want to use good Cloudflare, you can download Cloud-Defender 2.0 from my Thread here: see Downloads in Post No 47 and 49:

http://bestblackhatforum.com/Thread-GET-...der?page=5

That is only, if you have no cPanel.

RE: Do you have a web site ? Maybe worth a little worry right now...
This is real and happening RIGHT NOW !!
Hosting providers are scurrying for solutions as their costs are set to multiply.

Be very, very careful if buying hosting is in your plans.

My main provider is offering 2 choices:
1 - Stay using cPanel with strict limits, discounts voided, pricing higher, or=>
2 - Allow transfer to the directadmin server with a much better deal.

Let the buyers beware !!!

Like most things greed becomes a huge motivator but you can rest assured some other programmers are working on solutions and this golden goose will have laid it's last egg for Cpanel as much like Windows you will find more and more ways to circumvent it.

100% agree with you Jessyb !!

Windoze is indeed a dead-end for this member, and cPanel will soon also just be an old memory as DirectAdmin takes over.

As you said=> greed is a very poor guiding light, but also can be a pain-filled teaching tool.
