Getting a Restaurant

LESSON 3

Which Restaurants?

Do They Do Take-Out? Local or Chain?

Start with a restaurant you patronize and maybe even know the owner.

Approaching Restaurants

Here’s how I set up a restaurant:

I approach whoever is the first person that greets me and tell them why I’m there.

I’m not worried about getting to the decision maker just yet.

I’d rather have someone on my side that loves the magnets before I even talk with the owner. Also, I ALWAYS carry a sample magnet in with me so they can see how beautiful they are.

This is generally what I say:

"Hi, we give away magnetic take out menus like this one to restaurants like yours. There’s absolutely no cost whatsoever to you because they are sponsored by a few local businesses. Who would I speak with to see of you’d like these for your restaurant?

Great, is (_________) in?

Hi (_______) as I was telling your cashier, we provide 1,000, full color take out magnetic menus like this one to you at no cost whatsoever. We let local businesses sponsor the magnets so we can provide them to you free of charge.

We can customize it with your logo along with any other information you’d like. All we ask is that you distribute all of them to your best customers so the sponsors can get good value. Is that fair with you?"

Referrals

Once they agree to give out the magnets, this is the conversation I have to get referrals:

"Great, now obviously we wouldn’t put any other restaurant on the magnets, that wouldn’t be fair to you, but we also make sure they are what I call “kid friendly”. That is we don’t promote any business that ALL your customers wouldn’t be comfortable with. No adult themed businesses, bail bonds, tobacco outlets, liquor stores, etc.

Is there anyone else in particular that you wouldn’t want to see on the Magnet?

Great, now let’s talk about who you would like to see. Who do you bank with? Insurance? Pest control? Realtor? Car dealer? Auto repair? Tire dealer? Jeweler?"

Get plenty of referrals from the restaurant owner as well as advertisers and you will

NEVER have to make a cold call.

The location agreement doubles as a memory jogger. Just ask the restaurant owner who they want to see on the magnet and mention the business categories listed to jog their memory.

“Who do you bank with? where do you buy cars, who does your pest control? Who handles your insurance? etc."

Getting Advertisers

LESSON 4

Getting Advertisers
Referrals, referrals, referrals.
20% vs. 80%

To sell 10 ads ->

Talk to 12-15 referrals OR Talk to 50-60 cold calls?

Referrals are the key to getting your projects done in 2 days instead of 5 or 6.

It’s $$$ per hour, NOT $$$ per ad, project or restaurant...

Approaching Advertisers

Once you have your referrals, you can just approach them like I do:

"Hi (______________) I’m working with the folks over at (name of restaurant) and we’re going to be delivering to them 1,000 take out magnetic menus, like this one, in a few of weeks. As you can see, we have a few spaces available to promote local businesses. It’s only $299 and that’s to be on all 1,000 magnets. I was just curious if you’d like to be included?

Here, (hand them the sample magnet so they can see actual ads) you can take a look at this and see some of the work we’ve done for others."

Now they might ask questions like “will I be the only body shop?” or “do I have to pay it all at once?”
That’s great because those are buying questions and it opens up the dialogue so you aren’t just “pitching” to them without their input.

This is my preferred method, but make sure you use your own style and personality.

Tips:

Business Categories

There are certain business categories that are prime prospects for advertising on the magnets.

Through our experience, we have found that the top prospects are:

Insurance
Real Estate/Home Building
Retail/Boutique
Auto Painting/Body
Auto/Boat Dealers
Banks
Pawn/Jewelry
Food/Wine
Funeral Homes
Trucking/Farm Supply
Nursery/Farm/Lawn/Contractors
Medical/Chiropractor/Dental/Vet
Auto Repair/Quick Lube
Accounting/Tax/Financial Planning
Tires Dealers
Hardware/Building Supply Furniture/Appliances
Heating/AC Flooring

More Referrals

The key to doing the most business in the shortest amount of time is the successful use of referrals.

Obviously you want to get referrals from the restaurant owner, but you can also get them from the advertisers. After you’ve written up the ad and collected payment, just say to them:

“I really appreciate the business. By the way, who else do you know that might like to have an ad on the magnets?”

After they give you a name, say “Great, who else?” and keep saying that until they can’t think of anyone else.

Writing the Ad

Simple is almost always better when it comes to ad writing. The basic formula is this:

Business card information - location and phone number.
Logo - usually from business card, previous ad or letterhead.
Ad Copy - a line or 2 stating the most important things they want prospects to know about their business.

Tips: - Things like business hours are unnecessary unless they are unusual. If a retail store is open from 10 until 5, everyone already knows that.
That’s when all retail stores are open so don’t waste ad space mentioning it.
However, if they are open 24 hrs. or until 9 pm on weekends, that’s out of the ordinary and may be worth mentioning.
The point is - don’t waste ad space telling the obvious.

Publishing Your Magnet

LESSON 5

This is where we come in! We do it all...
Ad design.
Layout.
Proofing.
Printing/Manufacturing.
Shipping. (to either you or the restaurant).

You just do what you do best, be face-to-face with your prospects!

Publishing Timeline

Day 0 - We receive your ad copy and location agreement via email.
Day 2-3 - You receive a “first draft” proof of the entire Magnet with all the ads and menu. You give us the OK to proof it to the advertisers.
Day 4-8 - The advertisers have a chance to make any corrections/changes to their ad.
Day 8 - The final layout is sent to print.
Day 13 - Magnets are shipped.
Day 17-18 - Magnets are in the restaurant.
Obviously, these times vary depending on changes, revisions, etc.

?? Questions... ??

Q. Do I always have to sell 10 ads.
A. No, but 10 should be the target. We will publish menus with any number of ads, so as long as the baseline of gross sales is met.

Q. Do we always give out 1,000?
A. No, but it’s the most popular quantity. You can publish 500 and sell the ads for less if you’re working a small neighborhood or small restaurant.

Q. What is the average time to sell out a project?
A. 3-4 days is average. 2-3 is optimal. I suggest never taking over 5 working days. Take what you have at the end of the week and move on. The fastest I’ve ever done one is a few hours!

Q. What if the restaurant has a large menu that won’t fit on our take out magnet?
A. In that case the restaurant owner should select JUST the items he wants on the magnet. All restaurant owners know what their best selling take out items are. Also, you can automatically eliminate drinks and other items that everyone already knows they have.

Q. Do you ever call on “chain” restaurants?
A. We have a few menus in some very popular chains, but we suggest that dealing with “mom and pops” is easier and more profitable in the long run.

Q. Can I hire others and expand my business?
A. YES, in fact we encourage it. Once you’re a distributor, you run the business the way you see fit. If building a team is part of your vision, all the better!

Q. How much does your best rep make? A. A lot!

Q. How much does your average rep make? A. Not as much.

Earnings disclaimer: Earnings are determined by the simple formula “ability x effort = earnings”.
There is no way to measure your effort or ability in relation to others so only you can determine your income and, by the way, that’s the way it should be. We have folks with great ability that earn a lot by little effort. We also have folks that earn big with a lot of effort, even though the don’t possess great talent. If you have a high aptitude AND you put forth great effort, you COULD easily be in the six-figure club.

NO MEANS NO!

Stress-free sales. Why I don't cover objections, try to change people's minds, or sell on other peoples terms.

This is the hardest thing for most people to grasp, even though it's life-changing if you can get it and put it into practice.

Thanks for your share!!!
Happydance WOW! That was quick after requesting it! Maximum reps for you, Show! Happydance
Thanks, show what an awesome share.

I have a quick question?

If I have read this correctly we have to purchase the magnets through the supplier of this course/package will they not your credentials when ordering the magnets i.e email etc?

And it looks like this is geared for the US, not for the UK?
Excellent! Thanks for sharing. +repped :)
good share show. if i were to get in this business, i would probably just hire reps for a commission where the get a restaurant contact and the advertising contracts and i would take care of the rest.

i guess what this guy wants to do is promote his printing business so he came up with this course to do just that. just a quick research says you can get 1000 magnets for $500 which includes shipping so if someone wants to pay $600 for a graphic designer, they can do that but you can probably save $300 hiring someone for that or save $600 to do it yourself cutting costs dramatically. i would probably hire someone to do it for $300 and save $300 where my total cost is $800 and not $1,100. yea, extra time invovled not going with someone who will do it all for you but for someone just starting out in this business, this is what *I* would do to save costs.

some people wont work on straight commission but there are people who will....espcially with a pretty straight forward business model like this one and easy to impliment with little selling involved. if each project is worth $3k, pay the rep 2k and keep 1k. if the rep is slow, that's still 2k a month in their pocket. if the rep is average, it's a full time income for part time work.

this is assuming all the figures he is talking about are correct in how much time it takes to get the contracts and complete a project.

this is probably a good time to start a business like this with people out of work right now and businesses just starting to open up again. keeps people safe when you're not dealing with a high crowded working environment as well.

anyway, those are my quick thoughts. adding reps......
Thanks and reps.
