I have posted before about Allavsoft and how it is great for grabbing whole Udemy courses for local playback MINUS having to use their awful website for laggy online viewings.
My natural curiosity had me searching a little last night for alternatives even though I'm pretty happy with Allavsoft...and what I found out just amazed me !!
JDownloader already has an addon in its free version that grabs whole Udemy courses - this just shocked me shitless and I had to give it a try right away.
The process is very quick and simple - how cool is that ?!?
All you have to do is enter your Udemy creds in the account area, it verifies that they work - then you tell it the course URL and it finds what is there in a minute or so.
It works quite well too - just a bit differently than Allavsoft does.
Here is a comparison of what I've learned about both:
Allavsoft=>
- User chooses 1 of 3 video sizes, very handy to shring talking heads or when byte size matters;
- Grabs SRT and VTT subtitle files - very good for CC users like myself;
- Does NOT grab additional materials at all, which can be a bit of a PITA.
JDownloader=>
- I did not find any choice of video sizes, biggest was all;
- Grabs additional materials which is very handy;
- Does NOT grab subtitle files by any means that I could find;
- Is faster by a wide margin.
Until very recently I had never used JDownloader before because when I'd tried to get it installed it barfed on me a couple of times so I gave up trying, but...
Lately I found a way to get it that worked very well and easily for me, with various versions and sources.
This page:
Has a mega DL link for the JAR file, which is quite small, here:
After getting that, I opened it directly as my system does have Java, and it updated itself and finished opening perfectly.
I also found and tested a terrific portable for JDL from here:
JDownloader does pretty much EVERYTHING - this is what I am finding.
In the past, I really got good uses out of IDM - but there was stuff that it just ignored;
Eagleget is pretty good too, but also had its exceptions;
Mipony was mostly just a stinker.
