Quote:Rare are the systems of Magic and Sorcery that actually work and rarer still are the authors who can take such systems and make them easy to understand and utilize. This is one such system presented by Frater Malak.
I obtained a used copy (still have it) from a book seller in Clearwater, FL many years ago. It wasn't until a couple of year later that I started using it. I was in the field of credit/collections and worked an inside phone position. I made the little cardboard talisman using three shiny, new pennies and hung it in my cubicle at work. That month, I hit my goal (went over) which meant I got my bonus. It didn't work for the following two months so I destroyed the talisman and left the pennies at a crossroads. I made a new talisman and hung it up at work in the same place and again, boom! Hit my goal THAT month too!
It includes a number of 'spells' all in a simplified how-to format that actually do work. These are fun and can be adapted for a group, coven or lodge to use. Very simple and easy. Then it also offers full scale rituals with using things like a simple stick of incense, some Magic oil (made with crushed grapes, salt and oil) and other simplified things. (Do not confuse complexity with accuracy or power because the opposite is usually true - simplicity is best!)
One of the nice thing about the 27 rituals is you summon Spirits forth and work with them. The instructions are clear, concise and simple to follow. The Spirits are real and not something just inside your head as they respond to common questions with knowledge you do not know. They can be sent to do things like help you find missing people or items, get a new career, improve one's luck, find a suitable lover, and so on.
Malak gives you the passwords needed to get the assistance of these Spirits which is more accurate than most people know. Many of the old grimoires do not show passwords nor ever talk about them but there are Spirits who require them to speak and interact with the practitioner.
I used a couple of the rituals to help me with finding a new job when I got tired of the collections field. I made the talisman of the Spirit out of white poster board, blessed and consecrated it and then used it. I did the same with the Four Elelemental talismans and the Thaumaturgic Triplet. Just color them using whatever medium you feel happy with - I used colored pencils and they turned out nice. My used copy did NOT come with the talismanic card. No worries! Using the white poster board I made the talismans I needed. Then I laminated them in plastic so they last longer and this has not posed any problems with the Spirits or the workings at all.
Like most other Parker books on Spirits, this book does NOT address how to feed and pay the Spirits for their work. It assumes that the Spirit is going to work for free, always. Wrong. Nothing is free. But not only does this grimoire make that incorrect assumption, so do the old Medieval grimoires too. Thus be careful of asking too much of the Spirit and not giving back in return for services rendered.
It's best to set the terms with the Spirit BEFORE work is done as to what you are willing to give to the Spirit for its services. There are a wide varierty of things one can give and it should not be overlooked.
In closing, I think the book itself is pretty amazing and is right up there with Geoff Gray-Cobb's "New Avatar Power" and Al G. Manning's "Magic of the New Ishtar Power" both of which are well worth while to get and use in conjuction with the Frater Malak book. All three are great modern grimoires for the practitioner to use without the fuss and muss of worrying about things like Planetary Times, Ritual Tools, Robes, Watchtower rituals and so on.
