I think people prefer Wordpress as it is quicker and easier, plus there are loads of plug-ins etc to help with seo, indexing etc.
Downside is WP sites are easier to hack.

WordPress sites are not easier to hack, compared to simple HTML sites. Regarding the OP's question, HTML pages are normally loading faster and have a higher content/code radio. Both are good for SEO.
On the other hand, if you pick a fast-loading WP theme, optimize the site with a cache plugin, use WP SEO by Yoast, and -most important of all- publish great SEO'd content, then yes WP can be as good or EVEN BETTER.
All my sites are on WordPress, by the way. I love it. Easy to use - no coding - unlimited possibilities.
Hope this helps.

RE: is HTML5 better or wordpress ?
Html5 is faster and makes better responsive sites.

If you want a searchable database of products - You need a CMS like WordPress. Magento would be great but it's massive and needs an expert. Drupal, Joomla are no better than Wordpress, so stick with it - easier to get help.

Prone to hacking, so get All in One or Wordfence security installed as soon as the site is installed. From experience - the hacking scans start 15 mins after you install Wordpress. Install a country blocker set to allow only German or EU visitors only. Use CloudFlare as well.

RE: is HTML5 better or wordpress ?
Are you asking if it's better to have a site comprised of static HTML pages vs. a site which is run off of PHP and MySQL - such as is the case with Wordpress - where the pages are generated on the fly?

HTML is fine if your site is small and only a handful of pages, but if you plan on publishing lots of content and having a larger, more robust site, then you will want to go with something like Wordpress.

You don't want to be going through hundreds or thousands of pages to manually change a certain page element, such as adding a new item to your site's main menu or footer, as would be the case with a bunch of static HTML pages. Wordpress keeps your content separate from your site's layout and appearance, making it much easier for you to update down the road. There is so much dynamic functionality offered to you by building your site with Wordpress. You can change your entire link structure, dynamically add and update hyperlinks throughout your content, add e-commerce functionality, and so much more, by using Wordpress.

Wordpress also allows you to categorize, tag, and organize your content by various taxonomies - this type of stuff would be a nightmare to try and do manually.

RE: is HTML5 better or wordpress ?
There is no clear, "one-size-fits-all", answer to this. It depends on your needs, how often you need updates done, and your budget. HTML took a big step forward with HTML5. WordPress has become THE content management system website software out there. The short answer is:

You want to make the updates yourself - With WordPress you can log in from any place that has an internet connection and make text updates easily. Images can be a bit trickier, but for many, they will conquer this.

Another option is an HTML5 site, using Dreamweaver as your editor. You would need to be on a computer that has a copy of Dreamweaver, which means making updates from anywhere can not happen. If you are updating your site just from the office though, then there will never be any problems.
How often do you make updates? - If you are only planning on updating the site a few times a year, it would make economic sense to go with an HTML5 site. It will be cheaper to build, and cost very little to update over the life of the website.

If you are constantly making updates, would like to be able to add in a lot of database driven features, then it makes perfect sense to look into building a WordPress site.

Your Budget
- This is something we all have to take into account more than ever. You want what you need for your business, but at what cost?

HTML5 Websites typically run for less because there is far less database programming with it, if any at all. With HTML5 your options for getting a pristine site have gone way up over HTML4. So you don't lose a lot of the features you like in a WordPress site, and you pay less money for it.

WordPress has a lot of programming to it, so the costs can be higher. But if control of your own website is something you want to have, WordPress will help bring you there. With Plug-ins to enhance the database, along with the look and feel of some of the themes even before they are customized, WordPress can have some great advantages with membership capabilities, multiple databases, doing most of your updates from anywhere there is an internet connection to name a few. It's a powerful tool when in the right hands. :-)
So in the end, you can see the decision is more than, "one-size-fits-all". Once everything has been taken into consideration, an informed decision can be made to enhance your business.
