What is the absolute best video compression tool?
What do you guys use for video compression?

I'm looking to update some of my software and seeing what else people are using. I'm
not really a big video guy and could use a hand here.

I have a a 7gb set of vids I want to up, but I know they can be compressed to at least a 3rd of that since they are HD. The files are mp4 and optimized for TV. I'd like to squeeze them down for internet/computer viewing.

RE:
I like H.264 compression through Quicktime Pro. However, you can use the free program Handbrake for both PC and Apple and it does a pretty killer job. It's pretty simple to use and works well.

H264 is Mpeg4 compression and is great. Another good alternative is windows media encoder, which spits out .wmv files.

In Handbrake, there are many simple options for compression and file types. It should list them out by where you want to view the file. For example, iPhones, iPads, web streaming, etc... It's my new favorite tool for compressing video.

I hope that helps :)

Thanks for the tip. Handbreak is pretty cool, I always assumed it was just a mac app.

You're welcome! That's the least I could do to help you out. You've been incredibly generous and kind, so I'm glad I can use something I know quite a bit about to help out.

I thought Handbrake was only Mac too for a while, but then I grabbed the PC version and it rocks. There used to be, or still is, a program called SUPER as well. It kicked ass, but the interface was like Justin Beeber, you know, I just didn't get it lol.

I've been using Easy Video Suite to compress and upload videos.. it's pretty slick and dead well.. easy, not sure how it compares to other stand alone compression software.. Might not be the best option if your just looking for video compression but thought it might be worth a mention.

I think that would be easy as well. There's also Quicktime Pro for $30 and Windows Media Encoder which should be free I believe. I usually stick to encoding to .264 as it plays on pretty much anything these days. I deliver compressed shots in .wmv for clients that are only on their IT windows boxes. For everything else, .h264 rocks, and Handbrake does a pretty good job for free. Adobe media encoder is great, but $$$

I use xilisoft Ultimate because it converts just about anything from video to pics and audio. It lists conversions specific for different sites like facebook. Also for different phones such as Iphone, android or nokia or game plateforms, xbox, playstation etc.. http://www.xilisoft.com

A tool that I dang near use daily to reformat videos and at time reduce the size is FreeMake (100% free):

http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

Not really a compression tool, but with all the different formats / sizes I can normally get sizes I need at respectable download size.

If you do install freemake pay close to attention or you may have a toolbar or other crap installed.

Cheers!

if you think everyone else stupid, might be good time to look in a mirror...
