Search engine optimization basics
There are two categories of criteria that search engines use to rank pages:

* On Page Factors - Analysis of the HTML source code for a page
* Off Page Factors - Analysis of inbound links and the pages they link from

Each search engine weights factors differently, but the fact remains that they all have a limited criteria to choose from. By optimizing your site for one search engine, you will to a large degree optimize it for all of them.

Keyword Research

keyword research by far is the biggest deal in Search Engine Optimization. Before you can start optimizing your site for the search engines, you must first know which terms you want to target. A good start would be to choose 3 or 4 keywords you would like your website to rank well for. You should start off with long tail keywords first to build authority so that when you start targeting the big keywords , you have some authority to help you rank . If you start shooting for the top its going to be years before you rank decently in the search engines unless your in a non-competitive niche.

Keyword Density

Keyword Density is important because search engines use this information to categorize a sites theme, and to determine which terms the site is relevant to.The perfect density will help achieve higher search engines positions.Keyword density needs to be balanced correctly(too low and you will not get the optimum benefit , too high and your page might get flagged for "Keyword spamming")

If you want page X to rank well for the term"good on-page Search Engine Optimization factors" you need to keep your keyword density at about 7%.Don't clog it up or Google can tell your ********. Get some good content with a 7% density level and you'll be ranking

What is PageRank?

PageRank is a ranking system that previously was the foundation of the infamous search engine, Google. When search engines were first developed, they ranked all websites equally and would return results based only on the content and meta tags the pages contained. At the time, however, the PageRank system would revolutionize search engine rankings by including one key factor: a site's authority.

To determine how important, or authoritative, a site was Google chose several big sites, such as cnn.com, dmoz.org, and espn.com. These sites were clear authorities, and Google figured that if these websites chose to link to another site (let's say site B), then site B would receive a piece of that site's authority. If site B were to link to another site (how about C), then site C would also receive a piece of authority, though much smaller.

Using this system of passing authority, Google would then count up how much authority a site had and give it a PageRank from 0 to 10. The PageRank system has become more complicated since then, but this is how it all started.

On-Page Search Engine Optimization

Contant is King

Content is king and the more content you have (good,Search Engine Optimization'ed content ),the better your chances are for ranking higher and faster on the search engines. Make sure you have navigation bar that always has an option to go to your main page, and have related products/services as well to get those prospects to become customers as quickly as possible .

Title tag

The first and real important part of your on-page Search Engine Optimization is the title tag (<title></title>). The benefits of using optimized title tags .

1. A user searching for your keyword will see your site's link highlighted in the search engines if your page's title is the same as the phrase they searched for. This drastically increases click through and can even give you more traffic than those who rank above you if their title tags are not optimized.
2. Increase your rankings on the search engines.
3. Help the engines distinguish between pages that might look similar.

Meta Tags

The Meta description tag is a snippet of HTML code that belongs inside the <Head> </Head> section of a Web page. It usually is placed after the Title tag and before the Meta keywords tag.

Meta Tags are used to specify page descriptions. It does not influence the Search Engine Optimization ranking process but it is very important. A lot of search engines (including Big G ) display information from this tag in their search results if this tag is present on a page and if its content matches the content of the page and the search query.

Experience has shown that a high position in search results does not always guarantee large numbers of visitors. For example, if your competitors' search result description is more attractive than the one for your site then search engine users may choose their resource instead of yours. That is why it is important that your Description Meta tag text be brief, but informative and attractive. It must also contain keywords appropriate to the page.

The proper syntax for this Meta Tags is: <META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Your descriptive sentence or two goes here.">

ALT Tags

Any page image has a special optional attribute known as "alternative text.” It is specified using the HTML «ALT» tag. This text will be displayed if the browser fails to download the image or if the browser image display is disabled. Search engines save the value of image ALT attributes when they parse (index) pages, but do not use it to rank search results.

Header Tags

HTML header tags (<H1>, <H2>, <H3>, etc.) are more than a quick way to format text. Use them to define your page's organizational structure and simplify page navigation. Well-written header text informs visitors and helps them navigate through your page - maybe keeping them at your site longer. Effective header tags will even increase your site ranking on some search engines.

Bold, Italics

Some proclaim putting your keywords in bold or putting your keywords in italics is a benefit in terms of search engine optimizing a page.Don’t over use bolds or italics. Creating entire paragraphs in bold or italic text will simply nullify their value. In general, if you just intend to highlight a particular keyword, once or twice is enough.

Sitemap

Sitemaps are real important .A sitemap allows you to create a file hosted among the other files in your account that informs the search engines of all the pages your website contains. In other words, it provides the search engine with detailed information about the content of your website.

Off-Page Search Engine Optimization

Link Building

"Your Architect" This builds your structure and your value. Your Anchor tags should be keywords. not descriptions, not your site name, keywords. Don't get it twisted young guns. What will you be known for? What will you rank for?It all comes down to how people are linking to you. if you were selling vacuumes , would you rather rank high for "cheap vacuums" or "Marty's Vacuum Service" . Which is going to get searched more ?Exactly. Your Google Page Ranking on Google is directly influenced by back links .Make them count and make them quality. Also make them one-way until you learn three-way linking structures but I'm not even going to get started on that .Here's a list to get started with your link building .
