A good method is to look at your traffic. Take 30% of that and you have the number of links to build in one day.

It is the first time i hear about the % of traffic and the number of backlinks. Seem like a good method, very useful. More like the limit of how many backlinks you can build each day.

Exactly. If your going WhiteHat you have to remember it's your users that would make the backlinks. If your not getting enough naturally, you have to imitate what people would actually do. And I think the last I checked it was something like 30% of people talk about your site if it's good enough.

Way I look at it is look up your top 3 competitors backlinks and achors
Then you match what they have, But dont do it all in a aday.

I setup ms on a 15 to 30 day campaign until I get what they have then check rankings and adjust according to that
Far as how much you can build what ever you want just do not do 1000 today and nothing for a month instead build x amount daily

And doing it manual is nuts lol there is to many good tools for that MS rocks

Thats not very WhiteHat though, especially if your site is new and doesn't have much traffic. Google is smart. It's not really possible to have more backlinks than there are users (for WhiteHat).

What are you calling whitehat? trading backlinks? he can setup ms to create web 2.0s with decent content and that will do the job.

Also one more thing on this, we may differ on our opinions but that is why its good to chat :)
When you launch a promo its brand new? what do they expect they expect it to bang out the gate because if your doing you job your going to get a rush of traffic at first and then settle into a steady flow
