Storytelling is one of the oldest art forms that humans have. Stories have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation, and to portray moral values. The art of storytelling is an aesthetic performance with a number of artistic elements that that immerse the listener (in our case viewer), in well-developed stories. Storytelling is a skill that can be mastered, if one wishes to tell a compelling story, they must deliver it well. These elements include the essential idea of narrative structure, with beginnings, middles, and endings. An effective story is coherent and coincides with the "listener". As an artist we wish to captivate them with our images and create an to instill an emotion that relates to the subject matter of our story. There are many tools to go about doing this; exaggeration, embelishment, focal points, contrast, etc. This class will teach effective ways to communicate with your "listener". Humans have been visually telling tales since they started painting on cave walls. Even the ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphic, which contains symbols and images, in order to communicate. Today everyone does it in one form or another, whether it be through cinema, literature, expressions, and speech. In this class we will not just scratch the surface of visual story telling, but we will go in depth on every major aspect of visual story telling and also the art of storytelling itself. These skills are not easily forgotten once learned, you will never see a film, or tell a friend a story in the same way again. In this course you will learn key elements of storytelling and use them to construct your very own scene. The final project will be a story students create and illustrate themselves, having learned what they need to construct a coherent story. |
