One thing I noticed from watching some videos is when demo content gets uploaded for a certain Stack, as they call it, there's two different versions of it. For example, if you are going to be making changes on the backend of your site the without visual composer, there's a certain demo file for that. If you are going to be using visual composer, there's another demo you'll HAVE TO use. They have two different versions of EACH demo. Hope this helps things out as it took me a little bit to figure out what was wrong.
