Then there are a lot of them that show the very effective but pain-in-the-butt Cloudflare hack!

I think many hosting supplier had ssl service free (let's encrypt).
Maybe you should try it.

Those are often very misleading as its often either a SHARED certificate or you have to do your own self-generated which all browsers fail to recognize as legit.

99.99% of web hosting should have the necessary installs to make this work effectively for you and for free.

and is a html site and free solution?

check out sslforfree.com generate ssl for your site
and follow the steps.

my sites are wordpress but didn't use any plugin.
used the above site to install ssl as namecheap doesn't make
it easy to use free ssl.
