Weird, I don't get this message anywhere in 1.9.30.
That's is the last free version (everything after 1.9.30 is not free).
Pretty sure you can just ignore upgrading, but apparently you are getting a different message than me.

I think it wouldn't hurt to contact him and ask what will happen and if you can continue using it for free without upgrading.
If not, you should be able to modify the source code of your installation to ignore updates.

Edit: Be sure to keep your database and files backed up and up-to-date
