Ask any author and they'll tell you, the most challenging part of writing fiction is getting the plot right.

A story without a plot is like a building without a framework --- it won't take very long before it gives way and falls apart.

And once upon a time --- long, long ago --- a man by the name of Wycliffe A. Hill put together a series of formulas for writing story plots that resonates as a useful aid with writers of both fiction and screenplays from "back-in-the-day" (Hollywood's Golden Era) until this very day.

Chances are you've never heard of Hill and you're not alone. So here's a bit of background on him:

PLOT IT RIGHT

The ingredients necessary in a dramatic or story plot are: Places, People, and Dramatic Situations. The Plot Genie arbitrarily selects a locale and involves some character in a dramatic situation which is always productive of complications.

Depending on the genre, it introduces one in a series of incidents, obstacles and challenges that further complicates a predicament, creating a crisis that builds to a climax.

That, in a nutshell, is a story plot.

But Hill has a series of 8 Plot Genie Supplementary Formulas.

More about that in a moment...

Wycliffe A. Hill first came up with The Plot Robot, which was a spinning cardboard wheel with an insert that provided a writer a "dial-up" of random numbers (from 1 to 180), that could then be cross-referenced to the numbered lists in The Plot Genie Index book.

The writer could then refer to the numbers the wheel generated by looking them up in The Plot Genie Index to construct the skeletal framework for a story plot. The writer then goes in to "flesh out" the framework with creative details and plot twists to build a riveting story.

But The Plot Robot was a physical product.

In today's digital age of e-books, one can still use The Plot Genie Index, only, they will need to substitute the cardboard spinner dial with either an online random number generator app or high-rolling dice, such as the type used for playing Dungeons and Dragons.

The numbers randomly generated by these devices will dictate which numbers to look up in The Plot Genie Index to get the story characters, situation, dilemma and other components. After that, use your imagination to creatively pull the pieces together by making the different parts gel into a story plot.
