I also have the same question.

I used this way to upgrade...
1) At first, backup my website.
2) I did not delete the existing themes.
3) I extracted the latest theme file after downloaded from the OP sharing.
4) I uploaded all themes files and overwrite the existing themes.

Then, edited the style.css to the latest version. E,g 3.7.2 to 3.8.3

Use this plugin:

Remember check "Backup Option" for safe, if after updating make any problems, just restore old version!
