@john18: You're very welcome and thanks for your kind comment but to be honest, in the recent past, I have tried the approach you describe but it ended up being more work for me than it should have been. So I abandoned it.

And in defense of those who DO require you to post to the thread or to send them a private message to get a download, I fully understand their reasoning.

They are tired of leeches who take but never provide value.

They are trying to encourage community engagement by getting lurkers to do something other than lurk in the background and click links.

I liken it to going into a huge market or superstore with an oversized cart and filling ones basket to overflowing with all kinds of valuable merchandise. Then, simply walking past the checkout counter, heading directly for the parking lot without "paying" for any of it.

In the real world, the offending party would be stopped and detained for authorities before they could reach their vehicle. And there would be consequences for their behavior far more serious than the value of the merchandise they tried to get away with.

Look --- I get it. At the end of the day, as black-hatters, we're all stealing value from its rightful owners, so my supermarket scenario not be a fair analogy but it's the only one that comes to mind.

The person doing the sharing has every right to make you go through a few required actions to get whatever they are sharing.

When you consider they are sharing something from their own archive or sharing links they found in a web search, your inconvenience of having to post to the thread and send them a PM is a small price to pay if you get something you want, in the end.

This weeds out a lot of leeches, who want everything made easier for them.

Consider those required actions as the currency you pay for the privilege of getting the downloads you want --- just like in my grocery store analogy. In real life, we stand in lines at the store and part with our hard-earned money for the privilege of taking commodities home to nurture ourselves and our families.

And I completely agree with requiring forum members to have a certain number of REPS before sharing with them. If nothing else, this encourages them to post value and build up their reputation and that can be anything from posting a product review, answering someone's question or sharing a file.

A community is only as valuable as the people it is composed of. Leeches drag a community down; sharers and other contributors build it up.

Everybody here should be required to occasionally DO SOMETHING to benefit the community.

I would love to see a change on BBHF where newcomers get a grace period of 2 months where they can download from any of the public forum threads but if they don't contribute (ex: posting helpful advice, answering a question, fulfilling a request or sharing a file) before then, their account will enable them to READ ONLY. Only after making a valuable contribution will they be able to download files on a 90-day cycle. This would be the requirements for everyone here, except for people who regularly contribute. This would get rid of a lot of leeches.

Thanks for sharing this Layna. Yet another really well laid out and informative post from you.
I downloaded it to use for a bit of a time-out toy, but couldn't get the crack to work.
Not sure why as I haven't had any issues with cracks before. Anyway, I'll get it with a bit of
perserverance, but can't really spare the time just now.

I look forward to trying it out later on though.
