Use VPN, fake name and fake email address. Simple.

Is it worth the bother of all that, really, to get some s/w that likely calls home a bunch of times ?!?

Simple. Use a VPN such as HMA or the like. There are tons. Then use a fake name and fake email.
This is not the first time we have heard stuff like that. Just think - suppose 100 of us register and download it, do you think he will file court cases against all of us?
