@justanumber: Yes, as to "getting baked," I remember reading in a few of Brad Gosse's sales letters how dedicated he was to toking and how getting high was business-as-usual. We don't hear from him much anymore, so I suppose his comics and cartoon art is bringing in a pretty nice income. He's a pretty good artist, too.

So, if you're looking for a paid software you need to decide if you want a program that downloads to your desktop/laptop or one you log into and use online.

How much are you willing to pay? I've come across quite a few that were affordably priced and had great features.

Do you plan to make still cartoons or animated ones? And if animated, will they be movies? Explainer videos?

All this factors into what you need to go looking for ... so put these keywords in your search.

Make a list of what you want in any cartoon/comic software so that when you go shopping, you can narrow down what's best for you.

For example, I've already said I'd like to be able to import my own images or upload ones I create. I would also prefer a software that comes with a colorizer --- something I can color or re-color images with.

You may want something so simple that even a kid can work with it but on the flipside, you need to be sure that whatever you create won't look like something a 3-year-old made. If you are planning to use the finished creation in a book or on a website, you can't afford anything but a crisp, clean and professional output.

So visit a few of the sites and read the reviews. Visit the software manufacturer's sites to learn more.

Then pit the pros against the cons before you decide.

You DON'T want software that...

- Is difficult or time consuming to use;
- Is clunky. Your software should be light-weight and quick-rendering to make the most of your production time;
- Is a resource hog. If it takes too long to load or complete a process, that eats up your computer's resources;
- Doesn't have the tools you need built-in;
- Has too many limitations (ex: few image formats supported, you can't recolor images, etc.)
- Renders ugly cartoons (I've seen some images that made me go "Ugh!"

On first look, ComicLife 3 seems like a good choice. On the plus side, it's easy to use and (at only $29.99) very affordable. On the minus side, however, it has no drawing tools and importing issues have been reported. And that's not good.

RUN A VIRUS SCAN ON WHATEVER YOU DOWNLOAD!

And don't forget to run a local scan on the software you download before you install or use it. And if the file is a rar or zip archive, save it to your desktop, double-click to open it and look for any executable file because that's the one you need to right-click and select your computer's anti-virus program to run a quick scan.

There is a lot out there but you will need to know what you're looking for and be willing to do the research.
