While searching for something entirely different, I found a 4-part video on writing erotic audiobooks. I'll share that below, along with a few extra files I pulled up from various sources to make a neat little erotica package for authors.

Erotica can be a dependable, passive income side hustle for you.

While erotica isn't easy and doing audiobooks requires even more focus and discipline, anyone who really wants to (and has the right stuff) can make a profit.

@Nancy857: Having a sexy voice would help, I'd think, especially when reading the intimate dialogue between the characters.

Being sexy when the mood calls for it is what I would strive for. Otherwise, using a raspy, Marilyn Monroe-esque type of voice to read the entire audiobook would be over-the-top... and frankly, annoying. You want to keep the reader engaged and interested.

There has to be some balance.

The audiobook narrator has to be careful with the sexiness or risk becoming lurid. A reading designed to set the mood by putting the listener in the character's place is the goal, I'd think, so the narrator has to convey sexuality but keep it from becoming pornographic --- unless that is the aim of the audiobook.

Just the other day I was over at a Z-Library site looking for additional resources to add to this share. Quite a few e-books that were sexually explicit found their way into my search results.

I'm no prude believe-you-me, but at first, I thought something was awry with my browser in that these titles (and the illustrations on the covers) had absolutely nothing to do with my search keywords --- erotica being one of them.

I clicked on one book out of curiosity and downloaded it. At the bottom of the page where b(dash)ok(dot)cc suggests other Recommended Books in the same category, there were dozens more --- each one more sexually lurid.

So these shocking titles were not an anomaly. Clearly, this site confused erotica as being synonymous with pornography.

I started reading the e-book I downloaded but abandoned it after the first few pages because it was so poorly written. These books are big on describing sex acts but not much else. If you've read one, you've read them all.

If search engines take erotica to mean porn, it's because the people behind them do. While there is a thin line between erotica and porn, there is a difference.

As the artist who gives voice to an audiobook, you've got to consider both the book's content and its end user/audience and let that dictate how you deliver the narration.

But I'm no expert, which is why I link you to the leaders in the field whose sage advice you should heed.

You may very well get different advice from different sources. In that case, you should think carefully about it all and then decide which pieces of advice are best for you.

@discomix: Thanks, buddy, but the magic wand I use is freely available to everyone. It's called a search engine and I use Google and Duckduckgo exclusively. It does help, though, to use the right keywords and it can't hurt to know a few workable hacks to bring up better results.
