Chinese don't speak Madarin, since 1950! How do I know? I lived there for 14 years until September 2017.

The standard Chinese language - the official language of the land is Mandarin (also called Putonghua, based on the Beijing dialect). In Mongol, they speak Mongolian. In Yue and in Hong Kong, they speak Cantonese. There are other languages as well - but to say they don't speak Mandarin and haven't done so since 1950 is wholly inaccurate... it is the official language of the country. Chairman Mao mandated that their written language be simplified - so in the 1950s, the written characters - which sometimes had over 150 strokes in one character were transitioned from Traditional Chinese to Simplified Chinese - but the language remained the same - Mandarin. I'd love to get a coupon for this. All I can say in Mandarin is "I am an American." |

I have been to at least 5 provinces in the last 3 years; my last visit was to Shanghai in November 2016. Mandarin (putong hua) is the main language for communication! |
