The best membership plugin I have found is S2Member http://www.s2member.com/
The free version has plenty of features and most likely be all you need. The paid version sports more features and support is better but I have never needed it. As for theme have no favs. I always try to pick one from solid provider like WooThemes, that way know I have updates when and if needed. Woody

The S2 member is great, you can also check wp-member. For themes, it will depend on what your basic concept. I use a magazine style or portal news style, something like sahifa from themeforest

Tried lots of membership plugins, but the best one I've used is Paid Memberships Pro. It does what needs to be done with no BS and clutter.

I like FastMember. S2Member is good too. Have you looked into Zaxxa? It's a shopping cart and includes an wordpress membership plugin you can integrate..
