Thanks for answers.I believe if one offer free campains for about two weeks on facebook with zoosocial,video VideoSki.in,play theirs fb fanpages with pagenisis,using Social Marketing Suite and social mobi deals on their tabs and easy video suite with those who purchase would be great.All those campains with a link of my webpage and some sponsor,affiliate or cpa links.Also the most important thing to those customers is that inside of all of those campains they see running their new logo ,photo etc...I know people always like free incentives.After that clients probably need all of those service to run their business and pay you because you give them something very good to taste.

How does someone with a brand new elance or odesk account get any work? From my understanding, accounts on these sites take time to build up and look good, like getting ratings, good feedback, history of buyers, portfolio of work done, etc. Coz no one's gonna hire someone with a blank profile.

I was thinking a way of building up a portfolio on an elance account for example by showcasing prior work obtained from craigslist.

I know there are Tests that you can do to make your profile look more attractive, but being a middleman, I ain't necessarily going to know anything, unless you could ask someone on fiverr to do the test for you for $5? Just an idea.

How do you get your first client when you have almost nothing to show for it?

Ah yeah personnally i made 580 bucks just with the keyword "book cover" as in the video tutorial over 3 days. I don't think that they are some keywords more important than other as you play the middleman, you have just to be more "professionnal" than everyone else. Else you can also use google trend and wordtracker, but personally i don't use them i just type some keyword and look if there's some gigs. That's all. You just to keep track of everything and test, and you will see you can make money. I have one client who retained me for futur works they have to do. So it's not really rocket science. By the way i'm not in the US, nor canada or australia, but i manage to get clients, so it has nothing to do with your location, it's about being "professionnal"

Thanks for your insight. I'm located in Asia and I'm wondering when you got someone from Craiglist interested in your service offering, would he or she have a problem trusting in you? For example:

1. Do you have your prospect pay you before or after the complete work delivery?
2. Do you have a contract to sign between you and your prospect before the work start?
3. If you have the contract, is the contract presented as a company or as individual you?
4. Is the contract a necessary for doing this kind of arbitrage?

I mean there's no reputation system in place on Craiglist, how would you know he or she would pay you as agreed?

So to answer your questions:


0.You hav to convince the other business men and woman that you can do the work, the best way is to create a presence out there if you have an authority blog it's good or you're on linkedin, facebook, etc. It's the same way if you create a product or service online yourself, you have to know how to sell yourself. That's all to it, no magic.

1. It depends on the job and yourself. If the job is not expensive and not specialized, i don't ask for down payments (To give you an exemple, creating a logo for a business is not very expensive and you don't need in most cases very high specialized knowledge as in accounting or programming).
If the work is expensive and specialized, i ask for a down payment which is generally the price to do the work +10 % of the downpayment (because i use an escrow like service which ask 5% of every transaction and i always pay 5% bonus to my outsource worker. )
To give you a real job that i got recently as an example: A business wanted some customization on their wordpress site after an hour consulting with me. I charged them 650$ and my outsourced worker only asked 350$ for this job (to modify the wordpress site). The first time I asked the busness owner about 385$ downpayment, which payed my outsourced worker about 367$ (350$ fee+ 17$ bonus ) and about 18$ for the escrow service and once the work was finished i asked for the rest (about 215$, about 205$ for me and the rest for escrow service). That's what i do. You don't have to ask for downpayment, you can do it without, but you have to pay the outsource worker yourself in that case.


2.It depends again, on the fee that i charge, if the fees are less than 100$, i always have some contract, but it's not a contract written by a lawyer but myself (google is your friend). If the fee you charge are larger than 100$ (i.e. 600$), which is my case now i will ask for a lawyer to write a contract. For fees over 100$ you have to have a contract, it's much better (my opinion).


3.From 0 to 100$ (as a person), i consider this as a casual job, from the tax stand point. From 100$ to 100$+ as a company

4. It depends on what you charge, but i would suggest you under 50$ no contract, over 50$ to 100$ a contract that you wrote and over 100$ it's necessary. But be flexible, don't be pushy, if they don't want to sign a contract, use your email conversation as proof for you agreement. Always make a screenshot and print out your mails. This way no problem.

That's a way to do it correctly, but it's important to test and look what works and what doesn't work!

Watch the tutorial videos they answer your questions partially: Let's say that you do logos for businesses, you can use the portfolio of logos from your outsource worker and once you get a client, you can then add the logos the outsource worker done to your portfolio. If you want, "create" a virtual twin of the person that you hire to do the service or sell the product on elance, don't copy them, create a twin ;) With time you will create your own portfolio. As for finding a client, it's easy you have to send mails or propose yourself. Nowadays I have to send at least 20 mails a day to have at least one client. The client don't grow on trees you have to mail them or for elance propose yourself. I think if i remember correctly i got my first client after sending about eighty mails on one day. When i was talking about test i was also talking about the emails you send ( see which get opened, which are not opened and why, which get responses, etc.., they are services out there to help you with this) Another thing, if you have to pay someone to get the result you want, simply do it. Once you have your first client, you will get ratings, etc.. Your important task for now is to get your first client, once you have your first client the rest gets easier.
