Is SEO Worth the start?

Sorry if this has been asked else where before,

I am trying to create a reputable company. It'll be a software site and I would like to have good feedback and etc... I wanted to use black-hat SEO methods to optimize the traffic but would that actually hurt my reputation ? I wont be creating useless articles and posting it all over, rather I'll just few useful articles but I'm not sure on how to post it (post it 5 - 10 different sites? use article submission and submit it all over? etc...)

Can any one suggest a good way to take that approach ?
Also maybe any other methods that would be considered "safe" without hurting your reputation, or is it not even worth getting started..

I'm kind of hesitant because of all the things Im hearing about it, like SEO will hurt you more than benefit.

What do you guys think ?

If you have a good site/company that is useful and people enjoy, the traffic will come to you. Depending on what you want, I would focus on social marketing.

I think perhaps you misunderstand what SEO is. SEO is search engine optimization as you may already know, but SEO does not specifically refer to blackhat methods which is what i think you were thinking it was. SEO is very good for your website. Helps get traffic to your website faster. there are both blackhat and whitehat methods. you need to look for whitehat methods that will work with your skill set. You will most likely not find those methods here considering the domain and forums. There are other websites that help with legitimate ways of SEO and marketing etc.. just search through google.
