RE:
^^Worked at first, then got illegal license message.

I dont wanna mess with an illegal license on my anti-virus. Its supposed to protect the computer and having something thats calling back to avast EVERYDAY all the time doesnt seem like a good idea to mix with an illegal license.

I uninstalled and bought Avast Internet Security for 29.99 with a discount code

Yes, Avast is known to cancel out illegal licenses.

I have been using Avast since they were at Version 4.8 a few years ago. While at Version 4.8 I had a key genereator which generated keys for me for the Ultimate license. It worked for a while, for like 1 to 2 years, then each time I would update I would get a red quare banner on my screen informing me that I am running an illegal version of Avast and to purchase a license now. The software continued to function normally, it never stopped, none of its functions got limited in anyway and it continued updating just fine, just that each time it would update, it would display that nag screen.

Now, if you do computer repairs for other people's computer and you so happen to have installed a pirated version of Avast to help out that person, etc Such an incident would have made you a little nervous as it would tell your customer that you installed a pirated version of Avast on their computer while you promised them that the Antivirus would continue to work for the next 5 years or so.

So, there is always an inherent risk of Pirating Avast, they are known to give out these kind of little surprises down the road, even if nothing is happing *NOW* there is no guarantee that it will remain this way perpetually. Now, if you pirate avast for your OWN personal use, then there is not that much risk as you do EXPECT to receive such nagware in the future, but dont install it to other people, for other people the free version is more than enough, make them re-register once every year (but back then in version 4.8 there was an issue with Avast License Server that caused free 1 year licenses to expire way to early, as early as 1 to 3 months after the installation was performed).

Now, here's the reason why back then, in version 4.8 I resorted to obtaining a Keygen for Avast:

When Avast was on Version 4.8, everyone was forced to enter their email address to get a free license key by email, sometimes Avast email server would deliver the license key for the 1 year free avast almost immedately (like 30 seconds after submitting the form), sometimes it would take 5 minutes of waiting time, and sometimes it would take days. This annoyed the hell out of me, Each time that I had to go to my friend's house to do virus removals and install Avast (the only antivirus which I fully trusted and saw as a complete solution) was giving me that kind of headache. Not only that, when most of my friends received the code my email and was instroduced to Avast, Avast would tell them that the program was successfully registered and that they now have 365 days of protection. Well, everything seemed OK, but not so fast, my Friends would call me like 1 to 3 months after the Avast installation was performed to tell me that their computer is running slow, that they have viruses, etc. I would go to their house only to be shocked that Avast said that their license expired a few days to weeks ago. On some friends computer, the call was not for virus reasons, but because Avast poped up a message saying that their license will expire within the next 14 days, and this was 1 to 3 months after Avast FREE was installed and properly licensed. Avast was supposed to be protecting my friends and other people I helped for a FULL YEAR! Instead, after the first month to 3 months and sometimes 5 months, Avast would expire their licenses and leave these people in the air, ready to get infected with the first virus they came across.

THAT's where I got frustrated with Avast, I wrote in their forum expressing my complaint, that their FREE 1 year license was not lasting for a full year, I received a PM from a moderator on Avast forums giving me a 75% discount for their paid for license as a solution for the problems, I was not even given a reason why this was happening or what was going on with their license server. All of my friends and customers were home users since PC users, not in violation of their license and to be told to PURCHASE Avast (albeit at a deep discount) as a SOLUTION was enraging!

So, I got mad at Avast, clearly their License server was crapped out, they were playing deceptive practices in the hopes of acquiring paid for customers. That deceptive practice of them forced my hand in googling for a keygen for Avast which I obtained one. After doing Avast installations with a Keygen, for my friends I mostly settled with the Professional version of Avast, Did a few installations and guess wat, for a little over a YEAR their avast worked properly, then the nag screen (illegal license) started happening, at that poing Avast was up to version 5.x and I saw that Avast completely changed the licensing model starting from Version 5 and upwards, instead of the customer having to wait for an email from Avast informing them of their license key, the user all what had to do was click at a REGISTER button, type their name, email address and the free version would activate on the spot. I then decided to roll Avast 5.x to my friends, the legit free version, did their activations and had no further problems of licenses expiring too early for its time.

Till now, I have done many free Avast installation and have had no further problems. It seems that Avast has either learned their lesson that being deceptive is not good business practice or fixed what ever problems or glitches their licensing server was having that was causing these licenses to expire way early than expected.
