I've been using VirtualDub (had a movie of about 1:20 mins with fraps and it was 2.90GB avi file. installed a xvid coded and then used virtualdub to compress it to 199 MB. The quality was still very good :) Other programs that you can consider to use are ( in my opinion, i'm not an expert either): TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress or Total Video Converter HD.(you can download these at DOWNLOAD or torrents I suppose) Hope I could help you.
