IMPORTANT NOTE: This book is copyright 2015 and I can't find it anywhere with a more recent date but that IS only 6 years ago; besides, information like this is evergreen. Whatever method worked to put an assailant's eyes out or to worm one's way out of handcuffs in 2015 will work today.

DON'T BE SCARED ... BE PREPARED.

I know this book may seem like a scary read for some of you but we're living in scary times. This share isn't intended to make you anxious or afraid of others. It is to make you more keenly aware of your environment and other people (and just strangers) and how to prevent --- as best you can --- being placed in vulnerable situations.

But more than anything, this book is to make you better prepared in the event you're suddenly faced with the unimaginable --- someone with intentions to victimize you.

HOW THE AD FOR THIS "FREE BOOK" MADE ME
GO ELSEWHERE TO (REALLY) GET IT FOR FREE

As an off-topic, let me share a little back-story with you about how I learned of this book and what made me just a little peeved about their "FREE COPY" offer...

If you visited the FreeSecretBook site under READ MORE in my share, you're familiar with the "Free Offer" to get the Spy Secrets book.

I first noticed the ad copy for this book in the 2021 Harris's Farmer's Almanac. It was a full-page ad on the inside-front cover.

The copy was so intriguing. I was riveted as I moved from one paragraph to another.

At the close of the ad, it said I could claim my free copy of the book while supplies lasted. It sent me to the same website I shared with you.

I envisioned a large display in the header of that website, showing bright red numbers flipping down, decreasing as each newly-claimed copy of the book went.

Digital scarcity.

I could see myself giving up my first name and email address in exchange for my own digital copy.

Well, that was all in my mind.

It just so happens that they DO want your name and email; but they also want your mailing address. The book is paper-and-ink and will be mailed through the post office to your address. And they want you to pay the $9.95 to get it.

This "old-school" method worked like a charm from roughly the mid-1990s to early 2000s.

Today, with so much being digitized, it saves companies money to attach freebies or send download links in email. Or give you the link to a site where you can go to get whatever they're giving away.

But some companies are still using this combo-method to collect leads through their website then convert the package to direct mail.

"Just pay postage and handling" as the infomercial famously says.

SO WHAT WAS MY ISSUE WITH THIS...?

I'm not worried about getting on someone's mailing list. It's easy enough to opt-out if I don't like their messages (or the frequency of them). Or to stay-put if I do.

I don't like playing games. And sometimes, marketers try to be "cute" with potential customers and end up losing them completely.

It didn't bother me that they did this. It's marketing.

It pissed me off that they waited until after getting the email and first name to do it.

Nowhere in their Almanac ad copy was this mentioned. And only AFTER "opting-in" do you learn that you're expected to shell out 10 bucks for a freebie.

For me, that isn't a good look, trust-wise.

So, I closed the browser and went to b(dash)ok(dot)cc. Luckily, I found it there in e-Pub, PDF and mobi formats.

And it was FREE.

Free, as in that TurboTax commercial: Free-free-FREE-free-free.

I also did a little digging on Amazon and learned that the same book is available there, at cost, and it's the 2015 edition. So, it seems this hasn't been updated since the original publication date.

That's not even a deal-breaker for me because information like this is pretty-much evergreen; but I wonder why they simply couldn't send a digital link, build some kind of relationship and then hit you in the pocketbook?

Because it's a ploy to get you into their lead funnel! That's why.

Probably because this company has other larger, costlier course-like products on offer via direct mail and they want to introduce you to them.

I don't know if they ask for your phone number on the website but if you decide to give up your details for a freebie --- any freebie --- don't be surprised to be contacted. Sometimes by some pretty aggressive types.

I remember many years ago buying a small book by Russell Brunson. Weeks later, the phone calls began. Not from Brunson, himself, but "associates." Really boorish, Type-A goons you have to hang up on to stop hearing their voices.

Maybe this company is different but just be forewarned.

And that is why I grabbed this 6-year-old book in digital format. No pomp-and-circumstance. Just the download.

Marketers have given the word "FREE" a bad wrap. And sometimes, as a result, free isn't worth the real price you have to pay.

HOW TO MAKE BIG MONEY QUICKLY
ON A FREEBIE OFFER

But I'll bet you they're making out like bandits. Imagine... if just 1,000 people pay the $9.95 for shipping that "FREE" book. That's almost $10K in revenue. It's not all profit, of course, because the books still need to go out but these companies mail in bulk so they end up with a cost savings and there may be other small expenses to deduct. But still, $10 grand is $10 grand.

Now, herein lies that marketing message. Spy Secrets That Can Save Your Life is a great example of how to fill up your lead funnel with prospects and sell to them again and again.

To get a flood of money quickly on a freebie offer, do this...

- Write or otherwise get a good book or booklet with a timely message that meets an urgent need
- Write great copy to make your offer irresistible!
- Whip your reading audience into a frenzy until they'll just "have" to have it (again, good copywriting)
- Make it FREE ... but charge a few bucks (anything under $10 will do) to ship it out
- Incorporate scarcity: Have a limited number of copies or an absolute deadline date to claim it by via your website (and live up to it or you'll lose credibility)

That's the marketing recipe to get a flood of money on a "FREE" offer in very little time.

WE'RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOAT...

You will probably need a mailing service to get your books mailed because direct-response offers like this that gain leads via their website can create an overwhelming response that smaller companies are simply not equipped to handle.

Yep, it's old-school but it obviously still works. And is probably working big-time for the Spy Secrets free offer but I lost trust in this marketer based on how they withheld the postage cost requirement until the very end. I would have put that in my copy.

It's called transparency.
