This thread may answer a question posed here (by anonymous1981), waaaaayyyy back in 2014:

LAYNA'S DISCLAIMER: This information is NOT my own. I "borrowed" to share here. It is posted by "salvadordf" here:

I encourage you to visit the site above for even more helpful information on smart hacks, best vector graphics editors, and more!

Now, some of you may scrunch up your noses at the term FTP as being ancient and out-dated but actually, it has been refined over many incarnations and is still being used to transfer files between computers on a network. Again, go over to the site above and learn more about FTP and how you can find easily find files on FTP servers using the search engines here.

And here's a blog you can read if you're new to FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and need a quick-start reference:

Obsessed With Open Directories

In the past, I've written several posts about filechef and filepursuit for finding download files in open directories. If you haven't seen those posts (and would like to) check them out here:

Open directories are areas on the web where files are not protected; where anyone who knows how to search for them can get access. This is due to the site developer not using the appropriate tools or code to deny access.

Sometimes, though, the files may be located inside an anonymous FTP server and not out in the open. In that case, any of the search engines I address in this thread will help you to find them.

To get this party started, let's begin with an FTP open directory search engine called Filemare.

Filemare - Filemare is a powerful FTP search engine that allows you to search by keywords in a server, city, state, country, region, continent or even by file type.
Go here:
Magic Button :
Code:
.
https://www.filemare.com
.

I did a quick test search on Filemare to show you the results I got with the keywords: self publishing and the file extension or file type: pdf (see illustration below):

Each return will give you helpful information to help you decide whether you actually want to go through with the download. For example, you can see that each file shows you:

*** an active download link (blue) that confirms the file type or file extension requested (in my case, PDF)
*** the FTP URL/address and agency/company/organizational affiliation
*** the title of the file
*** the size of the file
*** the age of the file

Additionally, at the bottom of each page, you will see:

*** (if applicable) numerical links to additional pages for your search (see my additional comment about this below)
*** word links to access more information, donate, contact the web developer or purchase premium access.

Beware Weird Behaviors

Ghost links: Just so you know, my test search above showed 4 pages of results but only the first 2 pages had actual content. So, don't be surprised or disheartened to find page links that are empty when you get there.

Another thing: I did another search using Kindle. I got more than 10 pages of results but all the files were simply named "Kindle." So, you will need to look at the FTP address and file affiliation when trying to make sense of what's there. Clicking on the active link will open the folder to expose the individual files inside it.

Restrictions and Limitations - Free Use

Here is the message you get when you've exhausted your search limits as I did (free account users only):

Keyword Tips and Other Help

T-M-I: Filemare seems to have the T-M-I (Too Much Information) syndrome. I typed in [How to Self Publish on Kindle pdf] and got an empty page. So either that was info overload for the engine or there simply wasn't anything there. So, my advice is to stick with simple, short-to-moderate non-specific keywords. Don't use titles of books or programs. Use topics or subjects or niche keywords instead.

Delimiters: In most search engines, you can restrict or de-limit the results to get more of what you want (and less of what you don't). Though I haven't used it yet, I believe you can restrict results to get more recent results like yr=2016 and more relevant results by enclosing your keywords in "quotation marks." The down-side is, it could have a negative impact (no results).

Get Help When You Need It: Click the Advanced link under the search field to get additional search help.

If At First You Don't Succeed ...

If your search comes up short in one FTP search engine, use another! Over time, you can make a mental note of the results and you will begin to favor one or a few over the others.

Once you've test-driven Filemare, you will want to play around with the OTHER nine FTP search engines.

Search Engines Here

Filesearching - This is a Russian search engine for images, videos, music or any kind of files found in thousands of FTP servers. It has more than 31 million files in its database and it allows you to make advanced searches with multiple parameters.
Go here: http://www.filesearching.com
.
Filewatcher - This advanced file search engine not only lets you search individual files but also files inside packages (ex: .deb, .rpm, etc.). It allows you to search files using their names and contents. Filewatcher has more than 2,000 million files and more than 5,000 FTP servers in its database.
Go here: http://filewatcher.com
.
FreewareWeb.com/en-us - FreewareWeb is a freeware download website that includes an FTP search section. It has thousands of FTP sites in its index and you can search images, videos, music and any other files using filenames or keywords. It is case-insensitive search with advanced search options.
Go here: http://freewareweb.com/ftpsearch.shtml
.
GlobalFileSearch.com - This search engine lets you search images, videos, music, disc images, folders, compressed files, and regular files. It has 166 million files and more than 2,200 FTP servers in its database.
Go here: http://www.globalfilesearch.com
.
Google.com - Google can be used to search inside FTP sites but you will need to add a few search operators to your query (ex: ftp:// has to be in the URL and you will need to hide the results that have http:// or https://). If you want to search the keyword Kindle, you would type in the Google search field:

kindle inurl:"ftp://" -inurl:"http://" -inurl:"https://"
Go here: https://www.google.com
.
Mamont - Russian FTP search engine with the largest (so far) database. It indexes 3,700 million files found in 10000 FTP servers.
Go here: http://www.mmnt.ru/int/
.
Napalm FTP Indexer - Napalm has more than 949 million files and 14,000 FTP servers in their index. It uses a crawler that indexes their database every 2 to 4 days, giving higher priority to the most frequently accessed servers.
Go here: http://www.searchftps.net
.
Wenjian.net - This indexer defines itself as a file encyclopedia and includes an FTP search engine. The user interface is mixed in Chinese and English and it doesn't tell how many servers are included in the database.
Go here: http://s.wenijian.net
.

As in all open directory searches, you will not find what you're looking for all the time. You may have to trudge through a lot of sediment before you get to the precious ore. So, be patient and be discrete.

For example, if a file is older than a year, you might want to pass on downloading it unless the topic is evergreen or the age doesn't matter for how you plan to use the information.

So, if you (like me) enjoy hunting for downloads and have a little free time to spare, these search engines can help you to find files hidden away on FTP servers. If you know how to search Google using keywords and file types, you can now find additional hidden treasures to download.

Book-mark these sites and return to search them often. Enjoy the share and please post here if this information has been helpful. I love reading your comments.

Thanks
for reading!

RE: [GET] 10 FTP Open Directory Search Engines
Hi Dear Layna :)

thnx for the links.....;

I did know all o them , but for sure, you have put the accent on FILEMARE, because one can get pretty rare stuff with it, but if it is in FREE mode, you can overcome that by using TOR, just during the necessary time to get "new" ftps, then quit TOR and be back on normal IP, for exploring the FTPs......

The other very special FTP search engine is NAPALM, which is DIRECTLY searching in W A R E Z Ftps, so, here, you are really in a hidden world....with, sometimes, some precious GEM to get....

Some examples of Search on FILEMARE

RE: [GET] 10 FTP Open Directory Search Engines
@frenchmarketing: Thank you for the kind comments. I'm glad that you found value in my share.

@DeVinci: Thank you, my good friend, for the added value you bring. I am just getting started with these search tools and now that I see you have experience, I may need to be in touch to ask a few questions. By the way, DeVinci, on yesterday I sent you a very detailed PM regarding the charts you did for me. Did you see it? I was absolutely gob-smacked by your reference to a "female marked by Taurus/Gemini" influences. I surely hope you received it ... there's someone else on the forum with a similar name. So, please let me know if you got my PM because I provided a lot of the details you asked for.

@Everyone reading this thread: As in DeVinci's case, many of you will already be familiar with these tools (and more like them). My share is more so for newbies and people who are not aware that there are ways to find great stuff to download other than the existing go-to methods.

I wish you well and I hope these search tools will bring you more great downloads.

Thanks
Layna61524

UPDATE: @DeVinci: Thank you for the follow-up PM.
