No one likes being sold to.

We all know that, hence the reason many authors feel that they don't want to push their books to future customers.

Most authors prefer the approach, “Here is my book. I worked a long time to make it awesome for you. It is about a boy and his dog. You will love it.”

Unfortunately, this approach does not work.

I have sold coupon books, vacation packages, cars and trucks, televisions and appliances – about anything a general consumer would want to own. And that was all before I turned my attention to the Internet selling products and services, and before I started selling books online.

I have sold things online ranging from $1 per transaction to $60,000 per transaction.

And the one thing I have understood for years is...

The reason people hate “selling” things, is because they think back to salespeople they have met that left them feeling uneasy.

Most people know deep down inside that there was something amiss about their experience, but they are not sure what it is that was wrong about it.

During my short stint selling cars, my boss told me one day, “People don't really care about the color of the car. They don't care if there is a sunroof or not. They don't care about the stereo system, or if it has enough seats in it to comfortably seat their family. People want a car. Don't sell them what they ask for. Sell them what we have in stock.”

That advice never set well with me, because for me seating for five is not optional.

The problem with most sales people is that they are trying to “force you to buy” what they have in stock, instead of what you actually want or need.

This is the very reason why most people consider “selling” to be a “slimy occupation.”
