I have used it for my Tier1 backlinks.

These links are great for variety in your backlink profile. Even though some are not in your "niche", it doesn't matter because they are from high authority websites. And regarding natural backlinking-you wouldn't be able to control your backlink profile, so is good to have variety from some other sites that are not in your niche.
