Too many plugins is never a good this due to compatibility issues so add only those that are essential and useful. For me, essential includes Wangguard, BackWPUp, Cloudflare (to prevent DDOS and spam), WP SEO, Contact Form 7, gAnalytics or similar, autoresponder, TimThumb, and other seo plugins. Useful would include mobile-ready if you don't have a responsive theme, gallery, Nivo slider, Lightbox query for Native Wordpress, ...

All of the above mentioned are free too. I find that many paid Wordpress plugins are cumbersome cause code not clean, take up lots of space and can cause incompatibility. Some are good though so always look for free plugins in Wordpress repository b4 buying.
