Are The .edu Backlinks more important than that of simple blogs like .com etc?
In general a .edu or .gov link does still have more trust and authority in the eyes of Google than an average .com, .org, .net, etc. link.
But still a strong .com backlink can do quite as much as a weak .edu or .gov link!

strong agree with chosen. SEO without .edu / .gov is incomplete
.edu and .gov sites are reputable and reliable sites, and they are linked to by other high authority sites so your backlinks have more weight. If you can leave backlinks there, it will greatly help with your ranking, but it's not easy because these sites are mostly highly moderated. Look for wordpress sites that will allow you to leave comments but don't leave your anchor text on the message. Use your keyword instead of your name on the comment form and type in your URL. That will make your text clickable, and you have a higher chance of retaining that link.
Most edu link building services provide links from blog comments.
This are especially good when your competitors are using them.

Check you competitors (top websites) with ahrefs.com to see if they have edu backlinks and how many:

1. Go to https://ahrefs.com/site-explorer/
2. type one competitor and "explore links"
3. Click external, near "new/lost"
4. in the top-right check "edu:" then "apply filters"

Now you can see other websites .edu backlinks!
Hope this helps :p

With a free account on ahrefs I can check 7 websites for edu.
