Once installed, when you create your email address, it will offer you a personalized email address based on your first and last name, which you would have previously entered. The difference is that the .ME registry and Gandi will offer you the domain name for free for one year starting from the creation date!
This exceptional offer is only valid until December 31st 2012, and only via Thunderbird!
Note: only one .ME per person will be offered. In the case of an abuse of this offer, all of the domains will be deleted and the account will be blocked.

It didn't work for me either yesterday, but I tried it again and it worked.
You can use this without even having thunderbird, just copy this into your browser if you don't want to go through thunderbird:
