Introduction to the modern devil
I made a post on my LinkedIn page yesterday.
The post is about my new discovery about how I perform better mentally and make more money when I spend lesser time on social media.
Many people who read it will think I am talking about the time spent on these platforms.
Even though social media sucks your time...
The most profound effect I have found out is that it weakens your mental power.
And if you are the type of person who does a lot of mental work like me...
That is not good.
These 2 effects (Waste of time and reduced mental power) are both as a result of the modern devil that I call cheap dopamine.
What do I mean?
So, dopamine is a chemical - a satisfaction chemical that is responsible for allowing you to feel pleasure, satisfaction and motivation.
When you feel good that you have ACHIEVED SOMETHING, it's because you have a surge of dopamine in the brain.
The problem these days as a result of social media is that people go on social media where they...
- Spend time scrolling and consuming all type of feel good contents.
- Or they post feel good notes that gets them likes, retweets etc
All these things give the brain a sense of fake achievement.
And dopamine is released.
Another thing about dopamine is that it is an Oliver Twist chemical.
It ALWAYS WANTS MORE.
When you have done something that feels good...
Like eating something sweet.
Consuming social media content.
Getting feedback from your social media posts.
Watching Porn
Etc
Dopamine wants you to have more of that so you can feel that good feeling again.
And if you are not careful....
It becomes an addiction.
And deep and deep you go into a dark abyss.
Cheap dopamine today comes mostly in form of all the various ways to get entertainment that are out there.
Even though I have used social media to explain cheap dopamine in this mail, they are not the only sources of cheap dopamine out there.
They just look safer and more accessible than other sources.
- Netflix and other movie streaming platforms.
- Youtube
- Tiktok
- Twitter etc
Over exposure to these things is a huge part of why a lot of people struggle to get things done these days.
I am not saying you shouldn't use these platforms.
All I am saying is - Do not become a slave to cheap dopamine.
Do you know that the CEO of Tiktok said he doesn't even allow his children to use their app?
The crave for cheap dopamine has actually gotten many people spending time and money to create content (not for business) but just to get that hit of dopamine.
These people are slaves of this modern devil called cheap dopamine.
Mind you...
I didn't say Dopamine itself is bad.
The problem is that there are so many avenues that trigger cheap dopamine today instead of it been triggered as a result of achieving something real and valuable.
Like:
- Completing a project.
- Making good profits from your business.
- Etc
So, what do you do if this modern devil has sucked you into its dark abyss?
The solution is to do a Dopamine Detox from time to time.
A dopamine detox is kind of like a dopamine fast when you stay away from source of cheap dopamine out there.
Or at least reduce it to the barest minimum.
You can start with 7 days dopamine detox and see how it goes.
Anyway...the purpose of this thread is to tell you:
"The modern devil is cheap dopamine."
And it is so sweet, cuddly and subtle that you won't see it coming until it has dragged you into its deep, dark hole.
