In 2000 I was promoting online casinos on FFA (Free For All advertising) sites. No cost to post a link and actually making a few hundred bucks a month until the online casinos were outlawed in the USA. Then in 2003 I think, I started by direct linking on Google Adwords. Was so simple and cheap then. My first 2 ads were car insurance quotes and a dating site. Think I was paying about a nickel a click then! I remember posting the ads in the morning, went to run an errand, came back a couple hours later and had money in my account. I did this for 6 or 7 years at least until the search engines changed the rules and I got priced out of pay per click.
Although I haven't done PPC marketing for many years, this is still a viable method today though. It is just a bit more expensive, and you need to link to a real website. Competition is fierce and most merchants do not allow ppc marketing for their products. But digital products usually do. Clickbank, JV Zoo and Digistore 24 all have lots of digital products and many have prebuilt landing pages and funnels for affiliates to use.
