Hi Smithnowt! Thanks for the reply!
Good point about using a different PC! I almost forgot I still have an older PC and notebook lying around that are still in excellent shape and suitable for doing this myself without doing damage :-)
Greetings Tara and All.
I always have a 'play box' with its guts sort of hanging open and plug-in style drive rack so that I can dub around with a distro or 3 now and then.
This way I can just plug in a spare HDD with whatever OS I want or to reuse a HDD as a guinea pig for something that I want to test.
Having a BIOS that uses a hotkey for boot selection is also quite handy !!
Thank you smithnowt very useful share, repped
As a full time Ubuntu Linux user and (part time...) support provider for others, another time and life saver for me is SystemBack.
What I find that it does better than any other tool does for me is to make a fully usable and restorable image of a running OS.
This is 'burned' onto a USB stick, which can then be used to either have liveboot sessions on another PC that are exactly the same as the source PC's, or to install an exact clone of the source OS.
The process of making an image usually takes around 30 minutes and makes an SBLIVE file that is saved in local storage.
Using this same app, one then makes the bootable USB stick.
Here is 1 place where its files may be found:
Code:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/systemback/files/
Better still IMO are more direct ways to install it, if desired:
Code:
https://stechalon.com/install-systemback-restore-previous-state-ubuntu-linux
https://linoxide.com/linux-how-to/systemback-backup-system/
For me - having a 'canned' image of an OS that is already tweaked up with the desired s/w already installed is a really good thing.
For folks who just want a complete backup of their PC along with all their existing data, this does that too.
There are several spinoffs of it that have been more recently updated and improved, but I've yet to find another version which is complete along with a direct method to install it.
Also:
I cannot say if it does anything for other OSes though, because Linux is all that I need.
