Thanks for this share. I often want to take the plunge with Etsy but when I check it out, it looks like an over-saturated market.

Etsy is just the selling platform. It consists of hundreds, if not thousands of niches in the handmade market. So find a "market" on Etsy that is not over-saturated and go after that one.
Personally, I have 3 Etsy shops.
In one shop I sell digital products such as wall art prints, svg cut files for crafters, and planners.
In my second shop I sell print-on-demand products - But I do not sell the "over-saturated" products that everyone else is selling. I sell the higher end products such as Duvet's, Shower curtains, blankets, pillows and pillow cases.
In my 3rd shop I sell hand made wood projects - Wine Bottle Bird Houses, Custom step stools for kids, wall hangers for stuff like coats, keychains, dog leashes, etc.
I'm not gonna say I make thousands of dollars a month, but I do pretty well for what I need. I hope this helps with your decision making.
