If you are setting up one or more affiliate sites would you tend to use
a paid SSL certificate or get by using a free SSL version for the time being?

I always use free option.
Set up your sites through CLudflarele and you got your free SSL.
I don't see why you should pay for it.
Some hosting companies charge something like 50-60usd for that service, despite it being free through Cloudflare.

Like khawk1 said. Use Cloudflare to get SSL.
