Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Search Engine Optimization is a component inside SEM and is all about ORGANIC listings and getting you to rank a site in the organic listings with specific keywords.

Search Engine Marketing is everything that you do on the Search engines and it includes the organic SEO and PPC (f.e. Adwords). Also it has to do with conducting reputation management and looking at ROI (return of investment) and in that sense it is also a lot about conversions and A/B (Split) Testing.

That is how I would separate the two!
Search engine marketing or SEM,
refers mainly to the text advertisements which appear at the top or on the
right hand side of search engine results pages. These advertising links are
purchased mainly from Google Adwords and Yahoo whilst Search engine optimization
or SEO refers to improving a web sites' natural and organic ranking in the
search engine results page.
