Is there a guide to using this theme or do I have to fiddle around with it until I get it right? If there is one it would be much appreciated if someone can share thanks.

First of all take a look at their site, there's a complete guide to setup everything

then decide on what kind of layout you're trying to achieve, after that go to the theme option and paste your adsense or other ads code there in the appropriate location. Not that hard, I'd say. Hope it helps.
