I just pulled together a little 4-page guide on how I avoid getting my computer's safety compromised when downloading from mirror sites.
When I first joined BBHF, I was completely clueless. Everything came by trial-and-error. When I saw my first mirror site I sat starring at all the buttons and arrows. In some cases, there were 2 or 3 links that read "Download." As a result, I almost got taken by one of those sites with the urgent sounding warning: "Your computer has a virus. Please
call this number for assistance. Your financial information may be compromised." Blah-blah-blah...
Now, I'm no computer expert. Any professional will tell you that good anti-virus protection is your first priority. Then you've got to do your due diligence.
For example, I only use links from mirror sites I have had prior success with. Anything that looks weird or for any passwords different from the BBHF one, I just avoid.
Over time on this forum, I have made a few good connections. Unless I get an unfamiliar looking download link from one of the few friends I've made here on the forum, I pass it by. That's because I can always PM my BBHF buddies and they will either allay my fears or (in a few cases) send me a link I can work with. They're great like that.
But, if you're new to downloading from mirror sites, or find yourself constantly zig-zagging trying to determine why your computer screen is freezing, blinking, or going to sites you did not request ... then take a look at this little quick-read report.
There are two simple pieces of advice that might help you.
This isn't for experienced BBHF members or anyone who knows their way around mirror sites.
I also would appreciate comments ONLY if you have something that contributes to the thread. As I said, it will help a few but it isn't intended for the many. So I would hope NOT to get any snarky comments at all.
