This actually works. Very well in fact. But you must be fully aware of what your abilities are and be willing to learn more to keep maintaining these types of clients. It is an individual service that you are offering, and to have happy customers you get joined-at-the-hip for extended periods.
Which can be a very good thing... Or you may reassess and change your offerings completely. That is called "learning". :)
This is an excellent way for a relative newcomer to IM to cut loose a 9-5 or other entanglement that you need to make a living.
My additional suggestion is to obtain and archive any and all communications/testimonials with your happy client(s) to springboard your talents and remuneration to a new level when you promote again. It will work!
You can do his strategy with any profession. My friend was desperate and made a babysitter type of video and used the $50 fb advertising on it. He's now babysitting full time lol.
