why are these pdfs always so big file sized? i think even if ocr'd, size can be smaller.

At 33MB it isn't big at all (in current standards). It is that size because of the photos.
...Out of curiosity I removed all photos and re-saved it and it ended being 3MB.

I definitely prefer it with the photos, after all it is a book suggested being used with a partner and the photos help in getting in the mood.
