All SEO starts with low hanging fruit then you build it from there. If you are just starting out in SEO, Source University is a great place to learn. I know even as an advanced SEO, the course has been helpful to clear up some "SEO" issues.
So no he is not wrong and neither are you. SEO is really a game against a giant computer, so there is no right way or wrong way to do it. Just ways to avoid being caught
I dont know that Alex is a scam or people are gullible, but from my experience, you have to test everything you hear from anyone. It doesnt always work out the way it did for someone else. So yeah, learn techniques, test what works, focus and apply and always TEST again.
