I would agree. These wannabee social networking plugins for WordPress are pretty much all over priced. I don't know why anyone serious about social networking for their members has to use WordPress to do it. Having said that, the best option from my experience is BuddyPress. Especially if you don't have a bunch of money to spend.

While it might sound like you are getting less with BuddyPress and many people have stopped using BP due to difficult set up and theme compatibility, I would recommend taking a look at BP again. It's free and there are tons of free plugins to enhance BP functionality.

There are some very good updates coming from BP in the last couple months. It's worth taking a look at again. And there is continued interest in making BP better. It's worth a look. Save your money. Save someone Else's money. Try what is available on WP first.
Bump this.

I would love to see some of the pro extensions on here. Buddypress and profile syncing are annoying and Ultimate Member has a far more cleaner design out of the box.

How much have you been working with BuddyPress lately? It's not likely someone is actually going to share those over priced extensions here. But, KUDOS if they do.

BuddyPress is the most comprehensive and has more free extensions than anything else. It is also being very aggressively updated. Sure, it's been a pain to work with in recent years but there are many things changing with BuddyPress and with some of the extensions available the interface is becoming more easy to work with.

What I really dislike about the "alternatives" is the lack of free features and the incompatibility issues all of the alternatives have with other plugins as well as themes. They are all still in Beta mode whether they admit it or not. BuddyPress is the only one which has a significant community actually contributing rather than just crying about fixes that need to be made.

I've worked with it on and off over the past couple years. There's a lot I like about Buddypress, but the deal breaker for me is how separate it's kept from Wordpress instead of being a natural extension of it. Some of the plugins out there are worth it, but most aren't and others that are aren't updated frequently. BuddyDev has some of the best premium plugins - but you're looking at similar prices to Ultimate Member when it's all said in done. It may also be that Ultimate Member has the right set of plugins for me whereas others might be looking for other extendable features that the buddypress community provides. So far I've been using Ultimate Member without any premium add-ons and have been happier with it than Buddypress's core.

Exactly, I am using buddypress, and using a theme that is already styled for buddypress is the way to go. I even told that Ultimate Member in feedback that they are expensive with extensions, and you know what they told me? They said they were a two man show, and they want to live off the extensions, and the only way to do it is the way they charge for the extensions. So there is no way they are going to change their prices at all.

They also said for people that can't afford them to stay with buddypress. I don't see how they are going to get fulltime income from turning away customers like that and hope the rich come by and pay for their extensions like this. I told them good luck with their extensions.

Like I said buddypress is the way to go if you don't have money to spare. If you already got a theme that is styled for it, then you are set to go. I rather pay for a $63 theme on themeforest and styled for buddypress than pay even more for extensions that do the exact same thing with pretty much close look. The amount of prices they are charging for extensions cost about 5 times what a theme would cost.

$199 for bundle price and they say its worth $855, but I never trust these so called worth prices, because that is just to say they are that good and you find out after buying its really worth what you paid, because they have problems.
Take a look at this MightMag theme:

http://themeforest.net/item/mightymag-ma...me/8193358

This looks like an awesome theme to have for buddypress, but I don't have the money to get it, and I am already using Magic Mag theme and still looks good with buddypress. I paid $48 dollars for theme before it went to $58.

Hi there utahman1071,

I purchased the Kleo theme. I really like the way BuddyPress is integrated with it.

I think that theme is also available here on BBHF. It's worth a try.
