I'm not sure what "not opened to the public" means in this context. They are accepting applications from business accounts.
I have early invite to promoted pins for very new account without a lot of activity. But there is good domain and site attached to it. Maybe that helped with manual selection. Invite codes are specific to log-ins. (Somebody I know already tried to do an end-around. Ahem)
All in all Pinterest is still new and needs early adopters. Get in. Place ads. Get money.

I've been using pinterest ads for about 3 months now, i get a shit load of impressions, likes and repins, but no one is actually buying, made 6 sales in 3 months. There is definitely a certain method to selling on Pinterest, and i just saw a cool webinar on facebook on how to go about doing so. i'm going to implement the strategies and see what happens. People are making a butt load of money utilizing Pinterest, and i intend to be one of them. Wish me luck.

i am guessing you are talking about the teespring webinar, 'The New Frontier: Pinterest and Teespring' shared on the teespring youtube channel from teespring labs, a lot of groups have been sharing it. i think it would go good with this thread
